Why Indians are taking their long weekends abroad

The idea that international travel demands a long holiday is now a myth. For new-age travellers, all it takes is a long weekend to pack their bags and head out.

This Independence Day weekend turned into a passport-stamped escape for several Indians. Visa applications reportedly surged compared to any regular weekend, proving that a quick getaway is just as satisfying as a full-blown vacation.

While Delhi and Mumbai led the charge (no surprises there), Tier-2 cities like Surat, Mohali, and Jaipur weren’t far behind, joining the jet-set trend in style.

Rise in visa applications

Travel is now a lifestyle. While some choose to binge-watch Netflix over the weekend, others pack their suitcases, book a short flight and jet off to the nearest country.

Visa application portal Atlys reported a 32 per cent spike in visa applications around the August 15 weekend, underscoring how long weekends are fast becoming prime travel periods. Interestingly, Tier-2 cities like Surat, Jaipur, and Mohali saw an even sharper 35 per cent rise, reflecting a nationwide surge in travel enthusiasm.

So, while the tricolour fluttered across Indian cities, the airports were buzzing with their own story.

Who is travelling and where?

Younger generations are clearly driving this wave of weekend travel. Millennials lead the pack at 57 per cent, followed by Gen Z at 22 per cent.

Lately, Southeast Asia has emerged as the top pick for Indian travellers. Nearly 60 per cent of visa applications were for short-haul destinations like Bali, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Dubai, and Thailand. The reason? These hotspots offer the perfect mix – quick flights, hassle-free visas, and a guaranteed change of scenery.

For Millennials and Gen Z, it’s all about the experience. Think Bali cafs, Vietnam bike tours, and Dubai nightlife — destinations that promise lively, share-worthy vibes perfect for the ’Gram.

It also signals a notable shift in travel mindset in 2025. “Indians are no longer waiting months to plan a holiday. A long weekend is now enough reason to cross the border. The destinations driving this surge, from Bali to Dubai, all share easy visa access, and that convenience is redefining how India travels,” says Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys.

The shifting long-weekend travel trend

Today, travel is all about easy visas and chill itineraries that don’t kill the vibe.

With easily reachable destinations aligning perfectly with long weekends, Indians are redefining their travel habits. As visa demand soars and international getaways become more accessible, the trend of swift, spontaneous escapes is here to stay.

Fuelled by social media and shifting demographics, the evolving travel landscape is changing how Indians plan, experience, and share their holidays.

Maybe, just maybe, the bar for spontaneous travel has officially been raised. Got that travel itch? Sometimes, all you need is a long weekend and a passport.

What is Changing for the Tourism Industry

India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council Wednesday night proposed changes to its tax levies across industries. These include proposed revisions that would impact the tourism industry in India:

Hotel accommodations charging up to INR 7,500 ($85) per day for a room will now attract a tax of 5% as against the previous 12% tax levy. 

GST on air tickets for cabin classes other than economy class has been increased from 12% to 18% under the proposed changes. The tax levy on economy class has been retained at 5%.

There has also been a significant increase in tax bracket on admissions to casinos, race clubs, any place having casinos or race clubs, or sporting events like the cricket tournament Indian Premier League. These will now attract a 40% tax instead of the previous 28%.

According to the travel industry, the reduction in GST on hotel rates and the continued 5% levy on economy class tickets will allow affordability for mass Indian travelers.
