Use it or lose it? East Texas educators weigh in

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – ChatGPT, Grammarly, Khan Academy – students are no strangers to artificial intelligence.
“They are no longer Googling things. They are relying on A.I. as their search engine,” says Tyler Legacy High School chemistry teacher Chris Leatherwood.
There is a prominent divide between those before and after the creation of A.I, and it’s a huge debate in education.
“We have to address this because not only are students more comfortable with that type of technology than a lot of the adults are, we also know that it’s going to shape their education, their education policies, their education outcomes,” says Dr. Bobby Markle, Tyler ISD’s Chief Innovation Officer.
It’s a tool that’s advancing more and more every day, posing the question: Do we use it– or lose it?
“I don’t know if there’s cons. I do think that there are always concerns. Anytime we open our doors, literally and digitally, we’ve got to consider what the impact is going to be ultimately on instruction, therefore, students,” says Markle.
According to Markle, the main concern schools have with this platform is that “there are not privacy restrictions. And so when we think about putting students and staff into a platform that are going to produce outcomes or produce materials, we want to make sure that is self-contained.”
However, there are also the obvious questions that are left to be answered:
“I’m not concerned about cheating. I think that is a wide concern from the public, but I think that’s because they’re looking at it through the wrong lens, right? So like, we used to have typewriters, and if you made a mistake, you have to take the whole page out and you go start over. Then we got word processors, and now it’s a backspace, you know, is that cheating? That’s not cheating. It’s just a new tool,” Leatherwood says.
According to Markle and Leatherwood, the solution to A.I. in education boils down to, well, education.
“I tell my students, if you put garbage in, you’re going to get garbage out. You have to be a good prompt engineer. You have to fact-check,” says Leatherwood.
“I think education starts first, making sure they understand how you use A.I. in a current educational environment,” Markle adds.
With uncharted territory comes new exploring – and it’s a question that only the future can answer.
“What is technology? What does it really need to be used for? How is it being marketed to kids and to families, and really adults? And I think that’s a good conversation to start having, especially when we want kids to have experiences. Well, experiences don’t happen on screens. Experiences happen in real life,” says Markle.
East Texas schools are slowly releasing their policies on artificial intelligence- and they are using new observations to determine the right path going forward.

Oxford Union condemns president-elect’s reported comments on Charlie Kirk shooting | University of Oxford

The Oxford Union has “unequivocally” condemned comments apparently made by its president-elect about the fatal shooting of the rightwing activist Charlie Kirk in the US.
Kirk, 31, was killed at a Utah Valley University show on Wednesday in what authorities have called a political assassination.
George Abaraonye, who became president-elect of the debating society after a vote in June, posted comments in a WhatsApp group after his death, according to the Daily Telegraph.
One message was reported to have said “Charlie Kirk got shot, let’s fucking go”, while another thought to have been posted on Abaraonye’s Instagram account read “Charlie Kirk got shot loool”.
In a statement on Thursday, the Oxford Union criticised the student’s comments and said it “firmly opposes all forms of political violence and strongly stands by our commitment to free speech and considerate debate”.
“The Oxford Union would like to unequivocally condemn the reported words and sentiments expressed by its president-elect, George Abaraonye, with regards to the passing of Charlie Kirk,” the society wrote on X. “His reported views do not represent the Oxford Union’s current leadership or committee’s view.
“The current administration has, under president Moosa Harraj, no association with and is entirely independent from Mr Abaraonye’s administration.”
The statement added: “We would like to reiterate that our condolences lie with Charlie Kirk’s family, especially his wife and young children, who are enduring such terrible grief.”
Kirk and Abaraonye had met during a debate on toxic masculinity held by the Oxford Union in May, the Telegraph reported. Donald Trump, the US president, paid tribute to Kirk as a “martyr for truth and freedom” after the shooting.
