UCLA’s season goes from bad to worse in blowout loss to New Mexico

Once scheduled for a Saturday, UCLA’s final nonconference game was quietly pushed up a day last spring to provide a bigger spotlight for the Bruins.

It revealed perhaps the biggest embarrassment of the early college football season.

There’s no other way to spin it for UCLA after a third consecutive loss during what was supposed to be the soft part of the schedule raised a frightening prospect: Will the Bruins win a game this season?

They didn’t look capable of beating a quality high school team after dropping a second consecutive game to a Mountain West Conference opponent.

UCLA’s 35-10 loss to New Mexico on Friday night at the Rose Bowl represented new depths after the Bruins once again looked lost on both sides of the ball.

“It’s pretty low right now,” UCLA coach DeShaun Foster acknowledged after stoically walking off the field and later remaining expressionless when he met with reporters. “I’ve been around this program for a long time and it’s just unfortunate, what’s going on right this moment. Just not executing.”

It appears to be a lot more than that for a team that has been outscored by a combined 108-43 margin this season, a figure that would be even worse had two Lobos drives not ended inside UCLA’s five-yard line on a fumble and a turnover on downs.

Fans started streaming out of the stands midway through the fourth quarter after New Mexico’s Damon Bankston turned a short pass into a 43-yard touchdown, breaking a couple of tackles along the way.

UCLA is not only 0-3 for the first time since 2019, the Bruins have not held a lead this season after falling into another big hole on a night they were 15.5-point favorites. Their defense gave up 6.5 yards per carry and 298 rushing yards against the Lobos (2-1). They were outgained, 450-326, in total yardage. They committed 13 penalties for 116 yards after Foster said reducing penalties would be a priority.

“It blows my mind, you know?” Foster said when asked about his discipline message not getting through to his players. “It blows my mind. It’s something I’ve never been around and we’re going to figure it out.”

A bye week before opening Big Ten play on the road against Northwestern will certainly lead to a long list of questions for Foster after his record fell to 5-10 early in his second season.

Among the possible queries: How does he account for a team that appears as bad on offense as defense after adding star quarterback Nico Iamaleava, the biggest name in the transfer portal? Can he rally his team for one victory during a season in which it might not be favored the rest of the way?

Foster insisted he was still the right coach to lead this team. What makes him feel that way?

“Because I can get these boys to play,” he said.

Does Foster agree with those who have remarked that it appears as if he’s overmatched?

“Nope,” he said. “Not at all.”

Foster said a lack of talent was not the issue after a roster overhaul that required 57 players, including 37 transfers in their first season.

“We have enough,” Foster said. “We just have to execute. It’s coming down to execution.”

What makes him think that after back-to-back losses to opponents from a lesser conference?

“There’s people wide open,” Foster said, “they’re not getting the ball, there’s people not catching the ball, there’s people missing blocks, there’s people not making tackles, people not staying in their gaps.”

The Bruins were staring into the abyss after Bankston (154 yards in 15 carries) ran for a two-yard touchdown that put the Lobos up 21-10 with 10:42 left in the game.

It only got worse from there, after things had tilted in the Bruins’ direction in the third quarter when UCLA forced its first turnover of the season.

With New Mexico facing a fourth and one at the Bruins’ five-yard line, Deshaun Buchanan ran for two yards before having the ball stripped by UCLA safety Key Lawrence. Bruins defensive end Devin Aupiu recovered the fumble to thwart the drive.

The Bruins soon benefited from another Lobos mistake after Will Karoll’s punt was muffed and recovered by Kyle Miller at the UCLA 41.

UCLA eventually drove for Mateen Bhaghani’s 51-yard field goal that shaved the Bruins’ deficit to 14-10 late in the third quarter, but only after left tackle Garrett DiGiorgio was called for false starts on back-to-back plays.

“We gotta stop shooting ourselves in the foot, man,” Iamaleava said, “and it’s costing us points.”

It was a third consecutive ho-hum performance for Iamaleava, who has now lost as many games as a Bruin as he did in his final season at Tennessee. The quarterback completed 22 of 34 passes for 217 yards to go with one touchdown and one interception on a tipped pass.

In keeping with an early season tradition, UCLA found itself down by multiple scores before posting its first points. After trailing 20-0 against Utah and 23-0 against Nevada Las Vegas, the Bruins fell behind 14-0 against the Lobos after displaying more leaky defense and sputtering offense.

New Mexico hurt UCLA with both the run and the pass, following Scottre Humphrey’s one-yard run with Jack Layne’s eight-yard touchdown pass to tight end Simon Mapa on fourth and two early in the second quarter.

Boos could be heard inside the stadium. More embarrassingly, the Big Sky Conference’s official Twitter site responded to a post jokingly saying that UCLA was reportedly exploring a move to its conference by responding, “No thank you.”

Finally mustering a counter thanks in part to a roughing the passer penalty on the Lobos, UCLA finally got on the board when Iamaleava zipped a 12-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Titus Mokiao-Atimalala midway through the second quarter.

The Bruins then mismanaged a final drive before halftime with questionable playcalling and timeout usage. But there was no second-guessing of Foster from his quarterback after the game.

“I totally believe in coach Foster, man,” Iamaleava said. “You know, he gives me self-belief every day I come in the building to go and work. [He] just gives you that want to go out there and practice and practice hard. So, you know, we’re doing him a disservice, not performing for him ‘cause he’s telling us everything we need to hear, he’s telling us everything we need to do, and we’re not executing as players. So it all falls back on the players.”

Ultimately, reminded of his team’s deficiencies across the board, Foster took some responsibility.

“Everything that happens can fall on me,” Foster said. “I’m the head coach, so it can fall on me. We don’t have to try to word things differently or whatnot. I’m the head coach. But what I do know is that eventually this team’s gonna play with discipline. It’s gonna happen. It’s eventually gonna happen.”

The big question facing UCLA and its coach during what figures to be a frustrating fortnight: When?

Questions linger about alleged shooter’s motivation for killing Charlie Kirk | Charlie Kirk shooting

Though the suspect in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was revealed by authorities on Friday, questions surrounding his identity and motivations have exacerbated intense US political debates in the aftermath of the shooting.

Authorities revealed Kirk’s suspected killer to be Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old man who grew up in Washington, Utah, along the state’s south-western border.

In absence of a clear motive for the slaying, reports have tried to piece together information about Robinson and his background. He is a third-year student in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College in the state. Both of his parents are registered Republicans, though his personal political beliefs remain unclear. Now-deleted pictures on social media show Robinson and his family posing with guns.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published on Saturday, Utah’s governor, Spencer Cox, said: “It’s very clear to us and to investigators that this was a person who was deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.” Cox cited the findings of the ongoing investigation into Robinson and his possible motive but did not provide any further details about how officials arrived at that conclusion.

Those remarks from Cox were published a day after he delivered a speech following Robinson’s arrest where he had a candid moment about Robinson’s identity as a Utahn.

“Bad stuff happens, and for 33 hours, I was praying that if this had to happen here, it wouldn’t be one of us,” Cox said. “That somebody drove from another state, somebody came from another country. Sadly, that prayer was not answered the way I hoped for.”

He went on to explain that it would have been “easier on us” if the suspect weren’t from the community.

“Just because I thought it would make it easier on us to say, ‘Hey, we don’t do that here.’ Indeed, Utah is a special place, we lead the nation in charitable giving, we lead the nation in service every year,” Cox said, tears welling in his eyes. “But it did happen here, and it was one of us.”

After Robinson’s identity was revealed, some conservatives have softened their attacks against Kirk’s alleged murderer as an individual – but continue to leverage anger toward liberals as a group.

Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace of South Carolina tweeted on Wednesday that “it’s time to bring back the death penalty” following Kirk’s murder.

On Friday, Mace said that Kirk “would want us to pray for such an evil and lost individual like Tyler Robinson to find Jesus Christ”.

“We will try to do the same,” she wrote.

She later doubled down on the death penalty, saying: “Some crimes are so evil, the only just punishment is the death penalty.” But, referring to the way the suspect’s father reportedly had a role in turning him over to authorities, she also said: “We are sending prayers and our high regards to Tyler Robinson’s father for doing the right thing.”

Cox’s speech has largely been praised as highlighting unity during a divisive moment, providing a stark contrast to Donald Trump, who considered Kirk a close ally. The president on Friday appeared on Fox & Friends and was asked by host Ainsley Earhardt, “How do we fix this country? How do we come back together?”

“The radicals on the right are radical because they don’t want to see crime,” Trump said. “The radicals on the left are the problem – and they are vicious and horrible and politically savvy. They want men in women’s sports, they want transgender people, they want open borders. The worst thing that happened to this country.”

Conservatives had latched onto reports – that have since been retracted – that the casings for bullets found with the gun that police suspect was used to kill Kirk were engraved with markings indicating “trans ideology”.

“To the surprise of literally no one,” Megyn Kelly said on her show earlier in the aftermath of Kirk’s killing. “There’s one particular group that’s been running around killing Americans in the name of ideology, and it’s transgender activists or individuals, or those who proclaim that they are.”

Once Robinson’s identity was revealed, Kelly speculated that Robinson must have been radicalized after going to college.

“This kid got radicalized, and obviously had a psychotic break … I am disturbed to see that he appears to have come from a loving, intact family,” Kelly said. “If you look at the family social media profile, it looks like a happy family. It looks like a loving mom, and a loving dad. He had two younger brothers, there’s lots of family photos of them going on vacations and family dinners.”

Kelly noted that while authorities will be seeking the death penalty, it is ultimately a “mental health issue” that underpins the “radicalization” of young people who go to college.

Meanwhile, white nationalist Nick Fuentes sought to shut down speculation that Robinson may have been a “Groyper”, a nickname for a follower of Fuentes, after reports on the engravings on the bullets of the alleged killer’s gun led to theorizing on his ideology.

Groypers had long criticized Kirk and trolled speakers at his events because the former perceived the latter to be too politically moderate.

While Fuentes claimed in a social media post that he and his followers were “currently being framed for the murder of Charlie Kirk,” he also said in a streaming video: “I pray to God there is no further violence.”

“To all of my followers, if you take up arms, I disavow you,” Fuentes said. “I disown you in the strongest possible terms.”

‘Aka Charlie Sheen’ Director On Actor’s Crazy Revelations & Addiction

In the Netflix documentary aka Charlie Sheen, Director Andrew Renzi (Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?) was able to chronicle the rise and fall of the Two and a Half Men actor by relying on old family films, interviews with pals like Chris Tucker and Sean Penn and an extraordinary chat with Sheen’s former drug dealer Marco.

But the hallmark of the two-parter that dropped Sept. 10 was Renzi’s eye-popping interviews with the actor himself. “I take it very seriously that I’m making something that ultimately creates a legacy piece for somebody,” Renzi tells Deadline. “This is the Charlie Sheen documentary, and there probably can’t be another one. He has been such a privilege to work with because he had no editorial control over this thing, but he’s able to look at it and say, “all right, good, bad, all the things. This is an honest portrait of me that I feel like was representative of my POV, which was what I chose to do.” It’s a nice feeling to be able to walk away and say, okay, he’s good with it. I’m good with it. My hands are clean. ”

Here, Renzi explains how long the doc was in the works, why family members didn’t participate, and how Marco of all people helped Sheen to get off crack.

DEADLINE Give us the origin story. Why Charlie Sheen?

ANDREW RENZI I wanted to enter the celebrity doc conversation through someone who felt more like me, maybe a controversial figure. Maybe somebody who’s not so perfect. Charlie came to mind and I was able to get connected to him. We spent about eight months to a year getting to know each other before we shot a frame of the film. There was a long process of really figuring out whether this was even going to be a good idea. So from start to finish, it was about two years. It took some convincing. I didn’t know Charlie. I knew Charlie through the historical record of the internet, you know what I mean? I certainly didn’t know eight-years-sober Charlie Sheen. And I think that that was an amazing thing to experience. The only Charlie that I’ve ever known is a Charlie who’s sober. That played a big role in us telling this story. I don’t think he would’ve been able to do this eight years ago. So yeah, there was a long process of him understanding what the value of this would be.

DEADLINE How did you come up with the title? 

RENZI Everyone has their own idea of who Charlie is. Everyone has their own idea of what they remember from him or what they want him to be like. I just found that to be a really provocative concept because a lot of this documentary seemed to be him unpacking that himself. And the obvious is that [he was born with the name of] Carlos Estevez. I just find it to be a really interesting detail. It’s like the guy’s not even Charlie Sheen, legally. So who is this guy? It was one of those things I threw down on paper one day and I was like, that’s the one. And no one argued. 

DEADLINE Did you do two parts just so you can use the phrase Part Deux, a callback to Sheen’s 1993 film Hot Shots! Part Deux?

RENZI Listen, if there was three parts, I would’ve done the same thing. There were a lot of iterations with this project. I had a feature at one point in my head. But the two parts were really born out of the fact that I wanted part one to feel like a romanticized version of what drug addiction can look like to a drug addict, like a Hollywood rocket ship … sex, drugs, and rock & roll recreations, almost make it feel sensational to a degree. And then in part two, have it all fall apart, just really peel back what it actually looks like to be in the depths of addiction. The only natural format was two parts.

DEADLINE You started with the Two and a Half Men theme and Jon Cryer saying, “I’m not here to build him up or tear him down.” Why was that your start?

RENZI I think it was important to ground the audience with what, perhaps, is the most iconic thing about Charlie, despite all of the iconography around him. And the disarming nature of someone like Jon Cryer starting this thing felt good to me rather than just launching right into the chaos. I also really love the thematic concept of whether this a good idea. Is this a bad idea for me to be here sitting in front of you telling the story because of the cycle that has been his life? I just found that to be an urgent message for the doc. Is this going to open Pandora’s box again? Or is he truly sober and feeling better and in a different place?

DEADLINE Then you kicked off the anecdote where he actually flew a plane on his honeymoon!

RENZI That to me felt like the most Charlie Sheen in a nutshell that I could have possibly imagined. Here’s a guy who’s just married, on his honeymoon, drunk off his ass, and being given the steering wheel to a plane with 400 people behind him. That sort of power and mind fuck can’t be quantified by anyone else in the world. That is such a specific experience for him to have. It was a power that no one else could experience. If anyone ever had any questions about why a guy didn’t get sober sooner, there’s your answer. You keep getting the fucking plane.

DEADLINE You had a treasure trove of family super 8 footage to draw from.

RENZI It was so cool. His sister was the family archivist and quite literally just had a box of undeveloped film. No one had seen those things. So I got to edit together Charlie Sheen’s directorial efforts at age 8 as though he was doing it. I had hours and hours and hours of dailies that somebody, hopefully, gets to mine again and do something more with. I mean, there’s Sean Penn setting up camera angles for Charlie at age 10. There was a different iteration at one point of this project that dove a lot deeper into Charlie and Chris Penn’s relationship. Everyone’s a little kid at some point. Not everyone’s a little kid though that gets to make super 8 movies because they were on the set of Apocalypse Now.

DEADLINE You didn’t delve into Chris Penn, but you spent some time on Charlie’s friendship with Nicholas Cage. Why?

RENZI I think Nic Cage was a turning point. It was that moment in Charlie’s life where he became a superstar that also was going to march to the beat of his own drum. I think that union, that sort of unholy union, was pretty cool. Not many people knew they had this pocket of time together. It felt like such a fun way for the audience to be like, “well, yeah, if you’re going to become a superstar, who better to party with than Nic Cage?” It just set the tone for a lot of Charlie’s behaviors to come.

DEADLINE It’s extraordinary that you got his old drug dealer Marco to talk. I had many questions about how he cleaned up the crack at the end to help Charlie get sober.

RENZI Apparently it’s just extra baking soda every time. Not to give too much of an infomercial on how to cook crack, but you mix baking soda and cocaine together and you create crack. So he just kept making more and more with baking soda. Eventually there was just no crack, no cocaine in it. Charlie was just smoking baking soda.

DEADLINE I can’t believe you had video of the moment when Charlie found out he was fired from Two and a Half Men.

RENZI One of the guys who was following Charlie around a lot was a paparazzo. Eventually Charlie was like, “listen, you’re jumping out of bushes all the time on me. Just come with me.” And he ended up working for him and being a videographer for him at all times. This guy ended up with Charlie at the worst time of his life. Charlie was like, “oh my God. There was a guy with a camera there the whole time. We got to find the footage.” No one knew if it existed anymore. It turned out to be in a storage unit in Colorado or something, and this guy just handed it over to me and allowed us to use it. 

DEADLINE What was it like to listen to him discuss how his time on Two and a Half Men went up in flames?

RENZI It was a pretty unique experience. It was a little bit of like, “oh my God, was that me?” I think of all the things, having to look back at that moment in his life was the hardest. He really struggled with his behavior, the aggression, the sort of feeling like he was being a bully. He’s not a bully. He’s not that guy. I think it was hard for him to say how he treated Chuck Lorre, how he treated Jon Cryer, how he talked about things on the air, how he came at people. I think that made him feel the ick probably more than anything. I think shame is a thing that will haunt anybody who has experiences they’re not proud of. He didn’t make this documentary as an amends because he’s been living those amends for the past eight years.

DEADLINE Why do you think Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez declined to participate?

RENZI I actually watched the movie with them, so I got to sit next to Martin while he watched. It was one of the most intimidating moments of my life, but it was really just a function of Martin feeling as though Charlie’s message to his father was so present and maybe more available than him sitting for an interview. I don’t know if Martin wanted to sit down with me and relive all of that stuff. He felt like, this is Charlie’s moment to tell his story. You don’t need me. I respected the heck out of that. I mean, that’s a dad who really wants to just look out for his son and himself. And then Emilio, it just felt like he saw this as Charlie’s moment and Charlie was able to finally tell his story the way that he wanted to tell it. None of that ended up being controversial. Everyone was open about the communication. Those guys are minutes from each other, probably seeing each other on a weekly, daily basis. And so it was nice for me to know that it had nothing to do with whatever perceived rift there might be. It was quite the opposite. It was because of the love they all have for each other.

DEADLINE Do you think Charlie can truly explain why he’s an addict? Do you think he’s totally self-aware? 

RENZI My perspective is he is arguably, at least from a public figure perspective, the biggest emblem of an addict that’s still alive. He went as deep as you can go without dying. For the past eight years, he was not only just figuring that out for himself, but not trying to do the thing that he had always done … that’s to re-enter the public conversation, get another role. He truly went away to figure this out. And that’s pretty rare. Eight years is a heck of a stretch for anyone to go and reconcile with those things. So I’d have to say yes. I felt like when I was sitting across from him, I always thought, this is a person who’s honest, who maybe isn’t going to give everybody what they want, but he’s here and he’s present and he’s telling his own truth. That to me is a very specific type of success story.

DEADLINE Did you enjoy talking to him?

RENZI He’s hilarious. For a story that could be this dark, what a gift to be able to recount some of these things, but with a tone that doesn’t need to be wildly investigative and uncomfortable and unsettling. I felt privileged.

‘Demon Slayer Infinity Castle’ Makes Anime History in U.S.

Talk about an unexpected September bloom at the box office that continues this weekend with a cornucopia of new offerings, led by the record-smashing U.S. debut of the Japanese anime sequel Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – the Movie Infinity Castle. The Sony-owned Crunchyroll is handling the movie.

Based on a huge Friday haul of $33 million, including $11.4 million in previews, the pic is on course to score the top opening ever for an anime title at the North American box office with a weekend haul of anywhere from $56 million to $65 million (Sony is staying on the conservative side and sticking with the lower figure).

Heading into the weekend, tracking suggested the Demon Slayer would open to $35 million to $40 million; others thought $50 million was far more likely. Now, it’s coming in even higher after being embraced by critics and audiences alike.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is the first feature film in the three-part cinematic trilogy representing the final battle of the hugely popular, award-winning anime shonen series from famed animation studio Ufotable.

The film has likewise done record-smashing business in Japan, where it debuted in July. Its global tally is nearly $280 million to date. 

Directed by Haruo Sotozaki, Infinity Castle adapts the final arc of Koyoharu Gotouge’s best-selling manga series. Voice cast regulars Natsuki Hanae (Tanjiro), Akari Kitō (Nezuko), Hiro Shimono (Zenitsu) and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Inosuke) return as the Demon Slayer Corps embarks on a climactic assault against the demon king Muzan Kibutsuji. The film was co-financed by Aniplex, a subsidiary of Sony Group. International distribution comes from Toho, Aniplex and Crunchyroll, with Imax releases planned in over 40 territories worldwide.

The film also posted historic results for Imax Japan; ditto for Imax screens in North America.

Warner Bros. and New Line’s The Conjuring: Last Rites is falling to second place in its second weekend, and is no doubt competing with Demon Slayer for younger moviegoers. Estimates show that the record-breaking movie earning between $26 million and $27 million.

The final big screen adaptation of the beloved British show Downton Abbey looks to come in third with a debut in the $19 million or more. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is likewise benefiting from glowing reviews and audience.

Lionsgate’s dystopian The Long Walk, based on a Stephen King novel, is opening in fourth place with an estimated $11 million to $12 million. The pic earned a B+ CinemaScore, not unusual for the genre. Demon Slayer and Grand Finale each received an A.

In celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pixar’s seminal animated film Toy Story, Disney is rereleasing the movie this weekend to strong numbers. The pic looks to round out the top five with a pleasing $3.2 million to $3.8 million.

Rob Reiner’s sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is on course to open in ninth or tenth place with $1.7 million to $2 million. The sequel to Reiner’s cult-classic mockumentary earned an A- CinemaScore.
