Trump says ‘great progress’ made on Ukraine at US-Russia talks as ceasefire deadline looms

US President Donald Trump says “great progress” has been made over Ukraine during talks between his envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump also described the meeting as “highly productive” in a post on his Truth Social platform.

The Kremlin earlier issued a vague statement about the talks, with foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov saying the two sides had exchanged “signals” as part of “constructive” talks in Moscow.

He also said Russia and the US had discussed the possibility of strategic cooperation – but refused to share more until Witkoff had briefed the US president.

The meeting came days before Trump’s deadline to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

He said he had briefed some of America’s European allies following the talks.

“Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come,” Trump said.

The White House later told the BBC that Russia had expressed a desire to meet with the US president and that he is “open to meeting with both President Putin and President Zelensky.

“President Trump wants this brutal war to end,” said his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had spoken to Trump about Witkoff’s visit, with European leaders also on the call. “The war must end,” he said.

Zelensky has been warning that Russia would only make serious moves towards peace if it began to run out of money.

Wednesday’s discussions between Putin and Witkoff appeared cordial despite Trump’s mounting irritation with the lack of progress in negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.

Images shared by Russian outlets showed Putin and Witkoff – who have met several times before – smiling and shaking hands in a gilded hall at the Kremlin.

Trump has said Russia could face hefty sanctions or see secondary sanctions imposed against all those who trade with it if it doesn’t take steps to end the war.

Shortly after Witkoff’s departure from Moscow, the White House said Trump had signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on India for buying Russian oil. The tariff would come into force on 27 August.

The US president has accused India of not caring “how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian war machine”.

Expectations are muted for a settlement by Friday, and Russia has continued its large-scale air attacks on Ukraine despite Trump’s threats of sanctions.

Before taking office in January, Trump claimed he would be able to end the war between Russia and Ukraine in a day. He failed, and his rhetoric towards Russia has since hardened.

“We thought we had [the war] settled numerous times, and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever,” he said last month.

Three rounds of talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul have failed to bring the war closer to and end, three-and-a-half years after Moscow launched its full-invasion.

Moscow’s military and political preconditions for peace remain unacceptable to Kyiv and to its Western partners. The Kremlin has also repeatedly turned down Kyiv’s requests for a meeting between Zelensky and Putin.

Meanwhile, the US administration approved $200m (£150m) of additional military sales to Ukraine on Tuesday following a phone call between Zelensky and Trump, in which the two leaders also discussed defence cooperation and drone production.

Ukraine has been using drones to hit Russia’s refineries and energy facilities, while Moscow has focused its air attacks on Ukraine’s cities.

The Kyiv City Military Administration said the toll of an attack on the city last week rose to 32 after a man died of his injuries. The strike was one of the deadliest on Kyiv since the start of the invasion.

Ukrainian authorities on Wednesday reported that a Russian attack on a holiday camp in the central region of Zaporizhzhia left two dead and 12 wounded.

“There’s no military sense in this attack. It’s just cruelty to scare people,” Zelensky said.

Witnesses describe fatal Lisbon funicular crash

It was just after 18:00 on Wednesday when a carriage on Lisbon’s famous Gloria funicular careened around the bend of a steep cobblestoned street, crashed into a building, and crumpled, eyewitnesses said.

The carriage “lost control”, descending at full speed and crashing on its side, Helen Chow, who was at the base of the hill, told the BBC.

It sounded like a bomb, she said, followed by “complete scary silence…There was pitch black smoke. Once it dissipated, you saw exactly what happened.”

People were frantic and crying, with others running to help, she described.

“It was awful,” she said. “I am shaken.”

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, which killed at least 17 people and injured 20 more, some critically, near Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade in the Portuguese capital.

Video verified by the BBC shows the crashed yellow-and-white train against the building on the bend of a hill, with another train stopped at the bottom. People are running up the incline towards the scene of the crash.

People seen running after funicular derails in Lisbon

The two carriages of the 140-year-old funicular, which runs on electric motors, are attached to a cable that enables one to travel downhill while the other goes uphill, passing each other briefly along the three-minute one-way journey.

Witnesses described how the carriage near the bottom of the hill, which was starting to ascend, crashed a short distance backwards just before the upper carriage raced down the incline and into the building.

Around a minute before the crash, Ms Chow, who is originally from Canada but was visiting Lisbon, said she heard a loud screech.

She saw the bottom carriage fall back, past the white line where it usually halted, and make “a hard stop” at the end of the tracks.

A passenger on that carriage told Portuguese news outlet Sic Notícias it only went up a few metres before a “big bang” and “black smoke”.

“People fell to the ground and everyone was screaming inside,” they said.

Ms Chow also saw black debris and heard screaming, as the driver rushed to open the gates to the entrance.

“People jumped out of the window of that tram,” she said. “Just as this happened, I saw the incident tram crash over into the building next to the Subway restaurant.”

Another witness said they ran to help after the lower carriage dropped – before seeing the other coming down “out of control”.

“We only had time to escape, turn our backs and run,” they said. “It came down and struck the building at high speed.”

Teresa d’Avó said the carriage “hit a building with brutal force and collapsed like a cardboard box,” telling television channel SIC it seemed like it “had no brakes”.

She also told newspaper Observador the vehicle was “out of control, without brakes”.

“We all started running away because we thought [the carriage] was going to hit the one below,” she said. “But it fell around the bend and crashed into a building.”

Farid Shovro, owner of a nearby store who ran to the scene, told Observador: “I’ve never seen so many people dead together.”

Some tourists told the BBC they had almost taken the funicular at the time of the crash.

Eric Packer, from the US but visiting Lisbon on holiday, told the BBC he had discussed with his friends taking the cable car and took pictures at 18:00 and 18:01, but decided to walk back to their hotel instead.

They walked about 60 metres and heard a loud crash noise “like a rock falling, like a dump truck had dropped a load of rocks” at 18:02.

They turned around to see dust coming out of the alley about 45 metres behind them and walked back to see what happened. At first, he thought it was the train at the bottom that fell, until he turned and saw the other train that was above it, and realised “the magnitude of what had taken place”.

“People (were) walking up and running up to try and help,” he said. “Horrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and survivors.”

Donald Trump is having a lovechild with Satan: South Park sets up future chaos | South Park

So far, South Park’s 27th season has had one clear goal: to provoke Donald Trump into a tantrum. Every episode has managed to pick on a new and different facet of his authoritarian rule – the silencing of his media critics, his use of Ice agents as an intimidation tactic – while simultaneously telling everyone what a tiny penis he has.

So the anticipation levels were off the charts for this week’s episode, entitled Wok Is Dead, which promised to take on Trump’s tariff policy. And in fairness it did do this, but only in a couple of scenes where a Chinese character with an uncomfortably Mickey Rooney-esque accent complained about them. The rest of the episode just settled for a bunch of jokes about Labubu dolls, as well as calling Donald Trump “Satan” as many times as it feasibly could.

For the most part, Wok Is Dead found itself split in two. The bulk of the episode was taken up with a very traditional South Park storyline about a cultural fad pushed to extremes. Everyone at South Park Elementary has become obsessed with Labubu dolls, a line of vaguely creepy collectible plush dolls sold in mystery boxes. In real life, the Labubu craze has been ramped up to the level of fidget spinners and loom bands before them, prompting the market to be flooded with a rush of carelessly manufactured fakes that potentially pose a danger to children.

In the world of South Park, however, the dolls prompt satanic rituals, with children sacrificing poultry and summoning plagues in their desire to find ever-rarer dolls, much to the dismay of Jesus, who is serving as the school counsellor. And that’s about it for that particular storyline. It’s South Park by numbers: find something newly popular, mock it for 20 minutes, and then go home.

But that isn’t why people have been watching South Park in record numbers this year. No, they’re doing that because of how nakedly aggressive the show has been towards Trump. And this week it chose to achieve this by having as many characters as possible repeat the line: “Donald Trump is fucking Satan.”

This is for two reasons. First, throughout the season it has been evident that the cartoon Donald Trump has literally been having sexual intercourse with the devil, who makes a reappearance after his dalliance with Saddam Hussein in the South Park movie. Second, maybe the writers just wanted to call Trump “Satan” a bunch of times.

In essence, this was South Park pulling the same trick it did with its controversial 2005 episode Trapped in the Closet, in which Tom Cruise locked himself inside a cupboard while everyone around him repeatedly stated: “Tom Cruise won’t come out of the closet.” On one hand, Tom Cruise was literally inside a closet. On the other, it was winking at unproven rumours about his sexuality.

However, Trapped in the Closet had a grander aim, which was to describe the opaque beliefs of Scientologists. And it worked. Not only was it one of the best episodes of South Park ever made, but it changed the way the world talks about Scientology.

Meanwhile, the aim of Wok Is Dead (aside from showing its disdain for Labubu dolls) seems to be to call Donald Trump Satan. Which, compared with the anger and specificity of the episodes preceding it, feels a little lazy. From everything we know about Trump, it feels like the jabs that land the hardest are the ones that undermine his ego, which is why he expends so much effort responding to claims about the size of his hands. Meanwhile, comparing him to Satan – the all-powerful embodiment of evil – feels as if it might actually be taken as a compliment.

Still, the payoff to everybody saying “Donald Trump is fucking Satan” so often is that Satan is now pregnant with Donald Trump’s butt baby, which is bound to play out in future episodes somehow.

If you’re a fan of South Park, then Wok Is Dead’s scattershot cultural satire will have more than passed muster. But for those of us who have been tuning in to watch Trey Parker and Matt Stone take down Trump, it represents the first disappointment of the season. Perhaps it’s a blip, but this week’s episode suggests that Parker and Stone are starting to run low on ammunition, and want to broaden their horizons away from Trump in future episodes.

Still, if that’s the case, the outcome would be a regular South Park season, and there are many worse things than that.
