As the country gears up to celebrate Raksha Bandhan on Saturday, August 9, several state governments have rolled out free bus travel schemes for women — and in some states, for children too — to ease festive commutes and strengthen family bonds. The gesture aims to support sisters travelling to meet their brothers, ensuring affordability and comfort during the celebrations.
Here’s a look at the states offering complimentary bus services this Raksha Bandhan, along with key dates and details.
Uttar Pradesh: Three days of free travel
Women in Uttar Pradesh will be able to access free travel on state-run buses for three days — from August 8 to August 10.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the free ride window will begin at 6 am on August 8 and continue until midnight on August 10.
The scheme covers both UPSRTC and city bus services, extending to routes in rural and urban areas. To accommodate the festive rush, the government has also directed the deployment of additional buses across the state.
Haryana: Women and children travel free
In Haryana, the state government has extended the free travel facility not only to women but also to children under 15 years of age.
Transport Minister Anil Vij confirmed that the service will be available from 12 noon on August 8 till midnight on August 9.
The benefit applies to all intrastate government buses, including services to Delhi and Chandigarh. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has approved the initiative, which covers regular as well as intercity routes.
Rajasthan: Complimentary travel for two days
Rajasthan will offer two days of free bus rides to women on August 9 and 10 — a first for the state.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has announced that this is the first time that women in the state will be allowed to travel for free for two consecutive days.
The offer is valid on all buses operated by the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation and applies only to routes within state boundaries.
Madhya Pradesh: Free city travel and financial gifts
In Madhya Pradesh, women in Bhopal and Indore can ride city buses at no cost on August 9. Additionally, beneficiaries of the Ladli Behna Yojana will receive a special Raksha Bandhan bonus.
CM Mohan Yadav has announced that eligible women will receive Rs 1,500 in their accounts, along with an additional Rs 250 festive gift.
The government will also disburse Rs 43.9 crore to over 28 lakh women towards LPG subsidies, as part of its ongoing welfare initiatives.
Uttarakhand and Tricity region: Ongoing traditions
In Uttarakhand, the annual tradition of offering free government bus travel to women and young children continues this year as well.
Women in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula — collectively known as the Tricity — can also avail limited free bus rides on Raksha Bandhan day. The service is available only on CTU and CCBSS-operated AC and non-AC local buses and does not extend to intercity travel.
States with year-round free bus travel
In Delhi, Punjab, and Karnataka, women already benefit from year-round free travel on state-run buses. No special Raksha Bandhan announcements have been made as the existing schemes remain active.
In Delhi, however, the service is exclusive to local women travelling on DTC buses.
