Mumbai opens 5-km sea-facing promenade

Published

Mumbai has added a stunning new landmark to its coastline with the inauguration of a 5.25-km sea-facing promenade along the Coastal Road. The project was virtually opened by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, offering residents and visitors a new way to enjoy the city’s seafront. Stretching from Priyadarshini Park to Worli, the promenade is more than twice the length of the iconic Marine Drive, promising spectacular views of the Arabian Sea.

From August 15, the walkway will be open to the public for strolling, jogging, or cycling. It features broad footpaths, landscaped gardens, flowering plants, and wheelchair-friendly ramps, ensuring accessibility for all. Benches have been thoughtfully placed at intervals, encouraging people to pause and take in the serene coastal scenery.

To improve connectivity and safety, four pedestrian underpasses have been constructed at Bhulabhai Desai Road, Haji Ali Junction, Worli Dairy, and Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk. These underpasses provide safe access for pedestrians while reducing traffic congestion on busy intersections.

Speaking at the launch, CM Fadnavis described the promenade as a project that will redefine Mumbai’s connection with its coastline. He also announced that the Coastal Road will open for 24-hour vehicular movement from midnight on Independence Day, with strict enforcement of speed limits through CCTV surveillance.

Deputy CM Eknath Shinde praised the initiative as part of Mumbai’s broader “urban makeover.” He highlighted ongoing beautification drives and revealed plans for a massive 70-hectare park along the Coastal Road, which will further enhance the city’s recreational spaces.

Built on reclaimed land, the promenade is designed to withstand harsh monsoon tides, making it both a leisure attraction and a coastal protection measure. For Mumbaikars, it offers a fresh, vibrant destination to walk, cycle, relax, and experience the beauty of their city’s shoreline.
