Lufthansa Group to expand ‘Green Fares’ globally
Lufthansa Group is to expand its “Green Fares” across its worldwide long-haul network from 4 December.
The company’s Green Fares include compensation for carbon emissions within the ticket price by using alternative aviation fuel and contributions to climate protection projects.
The aviation giant initially launched these fares in the Scandinavian market in August 2022 before expanding them across its short-haul network in February 2023 and on a limited number of long-haul routes from November 2023. Lufthansa said that two million passengers have so far booked Green Fares since their introduction.
The Green Fares will be bookable in all travel classes across all the group’s carriers, including Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines and Air Dolomiti.
For flights within Europe and Africa, use of alternative aviation fuel reduces CO2 emissions by 20 per cent, with the remaining 80 per cent offset through climate-protection projects.
On intercontinental routes, alternative aviation fuel reduces 10 per cent of the CO2 emissions with the remaining 90 per cent being offset, according to a statement from Lufthansa.
Dieter Vranckx, chief commercial officer of the Lufthansa Group, said: “With our innovative Green Fares, we are involving our customers and offering them – as the first airline group worldwide – the opportunity to actively contribute to more sustainable aviation on more than 850,000 flights.
“Extending Green Fares to the Lufthansa Group’s global long-haul network is an enormously important and consistent step – not only for us, but for the entire aviation industry.”
Lufthansa Group has also introduced a new “environmental cost surcharge” of up to €72 per flight to cover part of the cost of complying with new green regulatory rules for airlines.
