Jerry Jones: Micah Parsons offer would make him highest-paid non-QB in guaranteed money

Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Wednesday he’s confident Micah Parsons will be on the field Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Judging by Jerry Jones’ comments Thursday, there’s a good chance that’s without a new contract.
While joining former Cowboys star wide receiver Michael Irvin on his YouTube channel, the Cowboys owner and general manager sounded completely committed to not renegotiating what he believes was already negotiated in March with Parsons. Jones said the offer would have made the All-Pro pass rusher the NFL’s highest-paid non-quarterback in guaranteed money.
“The world would know that I want Micah if they knew what I had offered him,” Jones told Irvin. “And he knows what I offered him.”
Jones and Parsons met in March and negotiated without Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, being present. Jones said Thursday that when they sent the contract details over, “the agent told us to stick it up our ass.”
Parsons, who requested a trade Aug. 1, is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie deal. His 2025 salary is just over $24 million. The NFL’s highest-paid non-quarterback in terms of average annual value is Pittsburgh Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt at $41 million per year. Last month, he signed a three-year, $123 million contract extension with $108 million guaranteed, the most guaranteed money by a non-quarterback.
When Parsons posted his trade request on X, his statement said, “I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present.” Parsons included details about the March meeting, writing that it was about leadership. “Somehow the conversation turned into him talking contract with me,” Parsons added. “Yes I engaged in a back and forth in regards to what I wanted from my contract, but at no point did I believe this was supposed to be a formal negotiation and I informed Mr. Jones afterward my agent would reach out thinking this would get things done.”
Jones continued to explain Thursday that Parsons is under contract for this season and the Cowboys can franchise tag him the next two seasons. The franchise tag number for a defensive end this season is $22 million. According to Over the Cap, the projected franchise tag number for a defensive end next season will be a little over $26.5 million.
“We really got three years to work this thing out,” Jones said, before explaining how he did the same thing with franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, who is the NFL’s highest-paid player at $60 million per season. “We couldn’t agree so Dak played the last year of his contract and then we franchised him. It’s exactly what happened with Dak, so we moved forward and ultimately we got a contract, made Dak the highest-paid player in the NFL. So the precedent is handling it like Dak.
“But in this particular case, then Micah comes in and plays this year under his contract. If he doesn’t, then it’s very costly, very costly for everybody.”
After Jones’ comments emerged Thursday, Parsons removed all references to the Cowboys from his social media. He then posted a video on TikTok showing him waving goodbye, with audio from former NBA star Allen Iverson saying, “Imma win wherever I go. Wherever I go, imma win. I don’t care where I go.”
Parsons has been attending training camp practices, taking part in the walk-through portions and meetings. But he has not been practicing. It remains to be seen whether that will change next week as the Cowboys begin preparation for their season opener at the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4.

It’s unrealistic to expect a deal to get done without Jones and Mulugheta talking. That hasn’t happened to this point. And judging by Jones’ comments Thursday, it doesn’t sound like he will be the one making the first call.
“Micah and I talked (in March) and then we were going to send it over to the agent,” Jones said. “We had our agreements on terms, amount, guarantees, everything. We were going to send it over to the agent, and the agent said don’t bother because we have all that to negotiate. Well, I had already negotiated. I already moved off my mark in several areas. So the issue, very frankly, is we’ve had the negotiation in my mind. And the agent is trying to get his nose in it right now and try to come in there and improve off the mark that we had already set.
“We’ve got this deal resolved in my mind, for the Dallas Cowboys. We’ve got it done. And if the agent wants to finish up the details, which he should, and do all the paperwork, he can do that. And we’re ready to go. But as far as the amount of money, the years, the guarantees, all of that, we’ve negotiated that.”

Florida State 31-17 Alabama (Aug 30, 2025) Game Recap

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — — New quarterback Tommy Castellanos led a punishing rushing attack for Florida State with 78 yards and a touchdown as the Seminoles stunned No. 8 Alabama 31-17 on Saturday, ending the Crimson Tide’s streak of 23 straight wins in season openers.
Coming off a 2-10 season, Florida State handed a crushing setback to Alabama, which was viewed as a College Football Playoff contender under second-year coach Kalen DeBoer.
Students and fans swarmed the field at Doak Campbell Stadium to celebrate the upset by the Seminoles, who were 13 1/2-point underdogs according to Sportsbook.
Under new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn — who spent eight seasons as Auburn’s head coach — Florida State was physical from the start, finishing with 230 rushing yards and averaging 4.7 yards per carry. The Seminoles averaged just 89.9 yards during their disastrous 2024 season.
The Crimson Tide had not dropped a season opener since losing 20-17 to UCLA in 2001 under Dennis Franchione, and this defeat will ratchet up the pressure on DeBoer from the demanding Tuscaloosa faithful. His predecessor, Nick Saban, led Alabama to six national titles.
DeBoer fell to 6-4 against unranked teams at Alabama; Saban went 124-4 in such games.
Alabama couldn’t solve Florida State’s defense, finishing with 87 rushing yards on 29 carries. Florida State halted Alabama three times on fourth down, the final time coming with 5:39 to go.
Castellanos, a Boston College transfer, had 16 carries while no one else had more than seven rushing attempts for the Seminoles. He also completed 9 of 14 passes for 152 yards as Florida State defeated its first ranked opponent since knocking off No. 19 Louisville in the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.
Micahi Danzy, Caziah Holmes and Gavin Sawchuk also had rushing touchdowns for Florida State.
Ty Simpson completed 23 of 43 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns in his Alabama debut. Germie Bernard led Alabama with eight catches for 146 yards.
Alabama: The Crimson Tide scored on an opening drive that went 8 minutes, 50 seconds, but struggled to sustain drives the rest of the afternoon.
Florida State: The Seminoles bounced back on a big stage as coach Mike Norvell began his sixth season by picking up a fifth win over a Southeastern Conference team.
Alabama hosts Louisiana-Monroe next Saturday.
Florida State hosts East Texas A&M next Saturday.

Alabama vs. Florida State live updates: Crimson Tide, Seminoles battle in clash of marquee brands

One of the biggest nonconference clashes of Week 1 features No. 8 Alabama making its first-ever trip to Tallahassee, Florida, squaring off against a Florida State team that is looking to erase the disappointment of 2024 with a strong performance from a retooled Seminoles roster.
Alabama enters the 2025 with its own bounce-back motivations after last year’s 9-4 finish fell short of expectations for Year 1 under Kalen DeBoer. After inheriting Nick Saban’s program, DeBoer fell just short of the 12-team College Football Playoff in part because of multiple losses as a double-digit favorite. That’s the same favorite status the Crimson Tide carry into this season-opening road tilt, providing a great opportunity for Alabama to start its playoff march by reversing that trend.
For Florida State, there’s a lot at stake in terms of proving that last season’s stunning collapse was just a blip on the radar. After going 13-1 in 2023, Mike Norvell’s team started the season in the top 10 and proceeded to go 2-10. Norvell made new hires at offensive coordinator (Gus Malzahn) and defensive coordinator (Tony White) and brings in a host of transfer talent, including quarterback Tommy Castellanos, to try and flip the script and get the program back on track.
It’s a huge statement spot for both teams in what should be an electric environment in a renovated Doak Campbell Stadium.
