India Unveils An Exciting 3-Day Trek In Uri To Spark A Tourism Renaissance And Highlight The Region’s Stunning Landscapes And Cultural Treasures

Published

on

Monday, July 28, 2025

A team of trekkers are on a 3-day trek from Garkote village to Kandi Pass in Uri here to promote eco-tourism, border tourism and heritage tourism in the state. As per the ‘TripChalo Uri’ campain, which has been launched in J&K’s Uri to attract tourists, the objective of this initiative is to trumpet Uri’s astounding natural beauty and historical heritage and to create awareness about the place’s potential as a sustainable tourism destination. With adventure tourists, nature and culture enthusiasts being the target of the campaign, it is expected to not only boost the village’s economy but also generate employability for its youths.

A group of 15 local trekkers embarked on a three-day expedition from Garkote village to Kandi Pass in Uri, a stunning region in north Kashmir known for its untouched landscapes and rich cultural history. The trek, which began on July 26 and is set to conclude on July 28, is part of a larger initiative aimed at boosting eco-tourism, border tourism, and heritage tourism in Uri—an area that has long been overlooked by mainstream travel circuits despite its vast potential.

The initiative comes in the wake of the launch of the ‘Challo Uri’ campaign, a movement focused on putting Uri on the map as a key destination for tourists who are eager to explore the untouched beauty of India’s border areas. Uri, known for its majestic natural beauty, including snow-capped peaks, pristine rivers, and lush forests, also boasts a rich cultural heritage that blends local traditions with historical significance. The trek aims to bring attention to these assets, showcasing them to a wider audience and raising awareness about their conservation and promotion.

The trekkers’ route passes through several captivating locations that highlight the region’s diverse offerings. Starting in Garkote village, the journey takes participants through scenic spots such as Batang, Latimar, Baba Fareed, Upper Dana, Bela Bhayun, and Bela, all of which are steeped in cultural importance. These places offer more than just stunning views; they reflect the region’s deep-rooted cultural traditions and serve as important landmarks for those interested in the historical and social fabric of the area. The journey culminates at the historic Kandi Pass, an iconic site that offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, further emphasizing the beauty and significance of Uri.

The team’s primary objective is to promote eco-tourism in the region. Eco-tourism is increasingly recognized as a sustainable travel option that encourages travelers to engage with nature in a responsible way, helping to preserve the environment while boosting local economies. By fostering eco-tourism, the initiative aims to create a thriving tourism industry that respects and preserves the natural beauty of Uri while providing long-term economic benefits for the local population. This includes offering opportunities for local guides, small businesses, and artisans to participate in the tourism economy, thus ensuring that the growth of the industry benefits the community as a whole.

In addition to eco-tourism, the initiative also focuses on promoting border tourism. Uri’s location along the India-Pakistan border makes it a region of strategic and historical importance. Border tourism offers travelers the unique chance to explore areas that are often inaccessible, providing insights into the geopolitical and cultural dynamics of the region. The trekking expedition serves as a means to educate tourists about the history of the border, its significance, and the challenges faced by those living in the vicinity.

Moreover, heritage tourism is another key aspect of the initiative. Uri is home to numerous historical sites and cultural landmarks that reflect the rich traditions of the Kashmiri people. From ancient temples to local festivals and rituals, these cultural experiences provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the region’s history and way of life. The campaign aims to shine a spotlight on these heritage sites, ensuring that they are preserved for future generations while offering visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in a culture that has withstood centuries of change.

The trekkers expressed their gratitude to the local residents along the route, praising them for their warm hospitality and support throughout the journey. The locals’ willingness to welcome and assist the trekkers highlights the community’s strong connection to the land and their eagerness to share its beauty with the world. It also emphasizes the potential for the tourism industry to become a collaborative effort between visitors and locals, where mutual respect and understanding can foster sustainable growth.

Organizers believe that the ‘Challo Uri’ campaign, alongside grassroots efforts like this trekking expedition, can serve as a catalyst for tourism-based economic development in the region. By attracting nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and cultural tourists, the initiative has the potential to drive growth in sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and local crafts. With Uri’s scenic beauty and cultural richness as its foundation, the campaign aims to make tourism a major contributor to the local economy while preserving the area’s heritage and environment.

The ‘Challo Uri’ campaign, which was launched earlier in the week, is part of a broader vision to position Uri as a sustainable tourism destination. This vision includes creating livelihood opportunities for local youth, helping them find employment in the growing tourism sector, and providing them with the skills necessary to thrive in a globalized economy. The initiative is seen as a means of empowering the community, fostering local pride, and ensuring that the benefits of tourism are felt by all.

The 15-member trekking expedition is more than just a journey through the beautiful landscapes of Uri. It represents a concerted effort to put the region on the map as a premier eco-tourism and heritage destination. Through initiatives like the ‘Challo Uri’ campaign, the region has the opportunity to unlock its full tourism potential, benefiting both the environment and the local economy, while offering a unique and enriching experience to visitors from around the world.
