India Proposes Transformational Upgrade to Hyderabad’s Regional Ring Road with Six-Lane Expansion to Support Future Urban Growth and Traffic Demands

Telangana has officially proposed upgrading the entire Regional Ring Road (RRR) around Hyderabad from four lanes to six lanes to accommodate the state’s rapid urban expansion, expected surge in traffic, and long-term infrastructure needs. The decision, announced after a high-level meeting in New Delhi with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, marks a strategic move by the state government to future-proof one of its most ambitious road projects. With Hyderabad’s metropolitan footprint growing rapidly and surrounding towns transforming into key commercial and logistics hubs, officials argue that a four-lane highway would soon become inadequate. The six-lane design is aimed at ensuring smoother traffic flow, reducing congestion in the city core, and boosting connectivity across Telangana’s emerging economic corridors.

Telangana Proposes Six-Lane Expansion for Hyderabad’s Regional Ring Road After High-Level Meeting in Delhi

Hyderabad, Telangana – August 6, 2025
Telangana’s roadmap for infrastructure development received a significant push this week as the state formally proposed an upgrade to the Regional Ring Road (RRR) project encircling Hyderabad. The announcement followed a meeting in New Delhi between Telangana’s Minister for Roads and Buildings, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari.

Following the meeting, Venkat Reddy confirmed that Telangana is seeking to widen the entire length of the planned RRR from the originally sanctioned four-lane highway to a six-lane express corridor. This decision is aimed at preparing the road infrastructure for anticipated traffic growth and supporting the rapid urban expansion in and around the Hyderabad metropolitan zone.

RRR Project to Be Expanded to Six Lanes

The Regional Ring Road is a 340-kilometre long arterial road intended to encircle Hyderabad, providing a bypass that connects key districts and towns surrounding the city. The project is currently divided into two main segments: the northern arc stretching from Sangareddy to Choutuppal, and the southern arc that completes the loop around the capital region.

During his discussions with Gadkari, Venkat Reddy emphasized the urgency of expanding the project to six lanes, citing regional growth, increasing vehicular density, and future economic needs. He explained that the broader highway would not only decongest Hyderabad’s inner road networks but would also improve logistics, trade, and inter-district travel efficiency across Telangana.

Northern Segment Ready for Construction

According to the minister, land acquisition for the 158-kilometre northern segment—from Sangareddy to Choutuppal—has already been finalized. This segment is expected to form the backbone of the project’s initial phase, linking several key towns and industrial hubs in the state’s northern region.

Reddy urged the central government to expedite the tendering process for this segment based on the upgraded six-lane proposal. In response, Gadkari reportedly expressed support for the revised design and requested the Telangana government to submit updated cost estimates reflecting the enhanced scope. He assured that the Union Ministry would facilitate faster processing of tenders and clearances to initiate construction promptly.

Simultaneous Execution of Northern and Southern Arcs

In addition to pushing for a six-lane upgrade, Telangana has also recommended that both the northern and southern arcs of the RRR be developed in parallel. According to Reddy, staggered implementation could lead to delays and increased financial outlays due to escalating land values and inflationary construction costs.

Executing both segments simultaneously, the minister argued, would not only ensure seamless connectivity but also help control costs and allow for synchronized development. He highlighted the importance of the southern arc in linking fast-growing suburban zones and facilitating direct access to major national highways and upcoming logistics corridors.

Strategic Benefits for Telangana’s Growth

The RRR, once fully operational, is expected to transform mobility across Telangana by creating a seamless transport loop around Hyderabad. It will improve access to towns such as Gajwel, Yadadri, and Ibrahimpatnam while linking major national highways and enabling smoother cross-state transit.

The six-lane configuration will allow for higher traffic capacity, ensuring the road network remains viable for decades as Telangana continues to expand its urban and industrial footprint. The project also carries strategic significance for reducing congestion within Hyderabad city, enabling freight vehicles and long-distance traffic to bypass dense urban zones.

Looking Ahead

With land acquisition complete for the northern stretch and the central government responding positively to the proposed expansion, the Telangana government appears poised to fast-track the Regional Ring Road project in its revised form. The next major milestone will be the submission and approval of revised estimates for the upgraded six-lane design, followed by issuance of tenders and the commencement of on-ground work.

India plans six-lane upgrade of Hyderabad’s Regional Ring Road to support urban expansion. Telangana urges simultaneous development of both segments.

If executed efficiently, the RRR could emerge as one of the largest infrastructure enablers in Telangana’s development journey, supporting not only improved connectivity but also unlocking new zones for real estate, commerce, and industrial activity across the Hyderabad periphery.

The incident took place shortly after the New Delhi-Amritsar Shan-e-Punjab Express left the Ludhiana junction station here and reached the Domoria bridge.

The victim, Aman Jaiswal, was travelling to his headquarters in Jalandhar, the train’s next stop before reaching its final destination.

As Jaiswal came out of the toilet, a man snatched his phone and tried to jump off the still slow-moving train. Aman managed to grab the snatcher’s arm and in the ensuing struggle, both fell off the train. The thief was able to escape to safety, but Aman’s lower body was run over by the train, according to Government Railway Police (GRP) sub-inspector (SI) Birbal Nahar.

The victim was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital here, where his damaged legs were amputated below the knees. He remains in the ICU, but is stable, according to hospital authorities.

The jawan was transferred from Jalandhar to Calcutta around three months back. He was headed to his headquarters in Jalandhar to collect the belongings left behind before his move to Calcutta.

The menace of snatchers on moving trains continues unabated. SI Nahar said snatchers target passengers just as the trains reach the outer parts of the city: “They have it all planned out for a quick escape.”

The GRP station has registered an FIR under Sections 304 (2) and 311 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deal with snatching and injuries caused during a snatching bid. The GRP are investigating the matter and are on the hunt for the snatcher.

Indian visitors to US in June dip over previous yr’s numbers for 1st time since 2001, except in Covid period | India News

Published

on

NEW DELHI: India’s peak outbound travel month of June saw a decline in the number of Indian visitors to the US in 2025 over the previous year for the first time this millennium, barring the Covid period. With 2.1 lakh Indians headed to America in June, the number was 8% lower than 2.3 lakh in same month last year, according to data from the US commerce deptartmen’s National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO). The provisional figure for this July shows a 5.5% fall over the same month last year.

Overall, the US has been seeing a decline in international visitors – and not just from India – in recent months. NTTO says the total non-US resident international visitor volume to the US decreased 6.2% in June 2025 over June 2024, 7% in May, 8% in March, and 1.9% in Feb. This Jan saw a 4.7% increase over same period last year, and April was up 1.3%.India is the fourth-largest source market for international visitors for the US. Since the two biggest source markets – Mexico and Canada – share a land border, India is the second-biggest overseas source market, with the UK being the largest. “Combined, these top five source markets (Brazil being the fifth) accounted for 59.4% of total international arrivals” this June, says NTTO.While travel industry biggies here say it is too early to pin the blame for the fall in Indian visitor numbers on the stricter visa regime adopted by Donald Trump in his second presidency, the impact could be more pronounced going ahead if the same continues. The reason: the US mostly issues 10-year-validity multiple entry visitor and business visas (B1/B2) so people who already have them can keep travelling. But if new visas get impacted for reasons like long appointment times or stricter issuance norms, then with a time lag impact will be visible.“We are seeing a visible impact on the student segment this year due to delay in visa issuance even after people securing college admissions. Historically, the biggest categories of visitors headed from India to the US have been visiting friends and relatives, business and students. The US was never a top leisure destination for Indians. That space has been led by Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe. North America came after that. Right now, apart from students, we are not seeing a dramatic impact on the other segments. But if new visa issuances are affected, they will also be hit with a certain time lag,” said a travel agent. With Indian diaspora of over 50 lakh, the US sees great demand for travel from the US.
