Digi Yatra, India’s pioneering Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI)-based platform leveraging facial authentication technology, has reached a significant milestone by crossing 15 million downloads. This achievement marks a major leap forward in redefining passenger journeys at Indian airports, enabling biometric-enabled, contactless, and privacy-first processing for millions of air travellers.
Launched in December 2022, Digi Yatra has already facilitated more than 60 million seamless passenger movements across 24 airports nationwide. With an average of 30,000 daily downloads and a projected user base of 16.5 million by August 2025, the platform continues to scale rapidly. Digi Yatra is currently being expanded to four more airports, Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru, and Srinagar in the coming months.
Commenting on this landmark achievement, Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO, Digi Yatra Foundation, said:
“Reaching the 15 million user milestone is a strong reaffirmation of the growing trust in Digi Yatra’s vision to deliver a seamless, secure, and future-ready travel experience. In 2024, initiatives like the ‘d-KYC’ campaign and expansion to Tier-II airports helped us connect with a wider audience. As we look ahead, our focus remains on expanding our footprint, improving user features, and setting new global benchmarks in passenger identity management. Strengthening multilingual accessibility remains a key commitment as we work to make the platform even more inclusive and user-friendly. Our long-term vision is to establish Digi Yatra as the ‘Travel Stack of India’, offering a secure, private, and efficient identity verification system across both physical and digital gateways.”
Digi Yatra is also preparing to support all 22 official Indian languages, enhancing accessibility for diverse linguistic communities. The upcoming Digi Yatra 2.0, currently in test mode, will introduce expanded features and lay the groundwork for international travel, pending regulatory approvals.
A landmark international pilot project is also in development, which will allow inbound travellers holding e-passports to experience the Digi Yatra ecosystem. In alignment with global standards, Digi Yatra has partnered with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) under the One ID X Digi Yatra framework to streamline international journeys.
With a bold goal to serve nearly 80% of India’s domestic air travellers by 2028 up from the current 30-35%, Digi Yatra is also exploring integrations with airlines and OTAs to enable frictionless boarding pass sharing. As India’s aviation ecosystem accelerates its digital transformation, Digi Yatra is emerging as a critical enabler of secure, paperless, and intelligent travel experiences.
