A high level delegation from Thailand visited Dibrugarh, a city of Assam with the most happening personality, to bolster ties between the two countries. The delegation aimed at exploring and strengthening the ways for the expansion of trade and tourism between the two countries, which presents a promising chapter in India’s Act East policy. As Assam is being developed as a hub for trade with South East Asia, this visit will be a stepping stone to promote trade and tourism in the region and particularly in the Northeast India with Thailand.

Reinforcing Historical and Cultural Connections

The historical relationship between Thailand and Assam is deep-rooted, and there are cultural, spiritual and economic exchanges over centuries. With such close quarters as a positive, members of this new delegation clearly share a collective desire to renew and bolster these ancient links and turn them into a 21st-century business.

Delegates met with local government officials, business leaders, tourism professionals and cultural contacts to learn more about possible partnerships. Discussions revolved on common areas of interest which were tea export, cultural tourism, spiritual tourism, and agribusiness. The discussions were viewed as key to the future of strategic partnerships.

The Growing Importance of Dibrugarh as a Trade Centre

Dibrugarh, also known as the economic capital of Assam, has progressed fantastically in the last few years. Located at the bank of the epic river Brahmaputra, no wonder it has developed into a trade, commerce and connectivity central. The successful tea industry, strong transport links, and its expanding role in healthcare and education could make it an ideal city for international partnerships.

“Among other things, the Thai delegates were impressed about the town’s prospects as a major trading centre, in the backdrop of cross-border trade due to India’s Look East policy. Improved routes from Myanmar into further to Thailand were seen as the major infrastructural priorities that would help revolutionise the region’s economy.

On How to Plate The Gateway to the Northeast

Tourism also took centre-stage, with delegates noting Assam’s rich potential as a haunt for international tourists. From the charming tea gardens of Dibrugarh and rich heritage sites to natural habitats and river tourism, Assam offers a fertile ground to develop new circuits of tourism.

The Thai side also considered new proposals to improve cooperation in tourism between the two countries, including combining tours for Thailand and Northeast India. These efforts are intended to position the country as a destination for tourists looking for a blend of cultural and ethnic experience, by taking advantage of increased connectivity through international flights and road networks.

Trends in Cultural and Spiritual Tourism

The religious linkage that links both Assam and Thailand, being followers of Buddhism, became a major highlight during the discussions. Both have long spiritual traditions and historical sites related to Buddhism. Framing circuits around religious tourism has the potential for generating substantial visitor flows, but at the same time it promotes understanding among different cultures.

Delegates showed interest for activities for the promotion of religious and cultural heritage, highlighting the opportunity for cross-cultural festivals, academic exchange and heritage conservation program. Such programming would enhance respect and attract the lucrative impact of “cultural”/tradition-based tourism.

Strategic Economic Outcomes Expected

Economic experts and domestic entrepreneurs expect that the renewed focus on elevating relations between Cambodia and Thailand will reap substantial economic rewards. The boosts in trade and the number of tourists will create employment of the local people, foreign exchange earnings, and will have a high level of added value to regional GDP.

Economic dividends are poised to come from cooperatives both in agriculture, tea exports, tourism infrastructure and cultural exchange projects. Such partnerships are expected to help diversify the local economy and more sustainable growth and less vulnerability to between recessions.

.An Ambition of Sustainable Expansion Momentum, and Cooperation

As India’s Northeast hurtles down its high growth path, such strategically scoped international collaborations as that witnessed during the visit of the Thai delegation in the recent days, assume paramount significance. Both sides appreciate that the opportunities of cultural closeness, of shared history, of mutual economic benefit are so huge.

This visit to Dibrugarh is in pursuance of not merely looking for opportunities but as a shift in our strategic orientation towards sustainable growth, regional prosperity and, deepening our relations internationally. In the future, Assam’s growing proximity with Thailand stands out as an extraordinary story of collaborative spirit, enterprise, of shared dreams and aspiration for a better tommorrow.
