Ares’ Star Says Her Character Reveals a Hard Truth About AI and Humans

Even in the opening moments of the Tron: Ares trailer, the story wastes no time in putting humanity’s future with artificial intelligence into jeopardy. And while lots of fans are wondering what kind of performance we’re going to get out of Jared Leto in the titular role of Ares in the Nine Inch Nails-scored sci-fi sequel, fellow cast member Jodie Turner-Smith has a lot to say about how her character is aimed to provoke audiences to think hard about the realities of an AI-filled future.

In a new feature interview with Vogue, Turner-Smith says that although her character, Athena, serves as a sort of antagonist to Leto’s Ares, Athena isn’t the real villain of the story.

“Every villain always has a story that justified their existence, which is why I think it’s so entertaining to watch movies where we take traditional villain characters and tell their story, like Cruella or like Maleficent. Nobody ever truly starts as a villain, and you can obviously empathize with and humanize anyone,” Turner-Smith said. “Athena is really principled. She’s the other side of the coin—what happens if AI begins to gain a consciousness that tells it to override whatever a human is telling them to do.”

Turner-Smith argued that if fans think Athena is villainous, the reason why is because of the corporations competing to bring the fantastical digital elements of the Grid into the real world, transforming Ares and Athena into soldiers.

“She was created by somebody with a dark spirit and energy, which was something that really interested me about this film, too. It opens up conversations about what can happen when artificial intelligence falls into the wrong hands,” Turner-Smith said. “Will humanity use it to wreak havoc? It feels very current. What happens when you are prompting artificial intelligence in certain ways?”

Turner-Smith went on to compare Athena to people in the real world who project their negative ideologies or biases onto AI training and prompts, causing the AI to reflect those biases. She cited Elon Musk’s Grok, which briefly declared itself “Mecha-Hitler,” as an example.

“I don’t know if you saw the article about Grok AI and how people were essentially training it to become antisemitic,” she told Vogue. “It makes you wonder: If someone with hateful intentions—whether they’re white supremacist, antisemitic, or homophobic—is prompting an AI with those ideas, is the AI just reflecting that? Arguing against it? And why would it, if it has no consciousness of its own?”

Tangentially, when discussing the film’s scripting, writer David DiGilio told The Hollywood Reporter that Ares was initially conceived as the movie’s villain before becoming its title character. Leto is famous for method acting and leaving his co-workers awful gifts, but Turner-Smith says that wasn’t the case on the set of Tron: Ares.

“Honestly, I was kind of hoping he’d go full Method—I would have loved it if he had sent me a Light Cycle! I think because we knew each other through fashion beforehand, it probably made the dynamic different for me,” Turner-Smith said. “But my experience was that he was a comrade-in-arms on set. Maybe that’s why it felt like we could have that kind of relationship during filming.”

Folks can see for themselves if we’re the real baddies after all when Tron: Ares hits theaters on October 10.

“In the next three years, 1 billion AI devices will spread to households around the world,” said Kim Chul-ki, head of Samsung Electronics’ DA business division. “The Samsung AI home experience will become a daily life for customers at a fast pace like never before.” In a situation where AI is rapidly spreading to the home, Samsung’s leadership will be maintained.

With home appliance companies connecting smartphones and home appliances into one through various smart home applications, Samsung Electronics’ strategy is to build personalized AI by connecting its smartphone, TV, and home appliance ecosystem. Samsung Electronics aims for Ambient AI, which does not stand out to users, but provides customized experiences in real time by grasping the user’s environment and behavior patterns such as temperature, lighting, sound, and movement.

Typically, in the morning, you can check the weather and schedule through the “Now Brief” installed on your Galaxy smartphone and allow air conditioners and lights in your home to operate on their own according to your usual habits. In addition, through the ‘Family Care’ service, you can take care of your parents who live separately. If there are abnormal signs in the usage patterns of home appliances and smartphones in the house or if the motion is not detected for a certain period of time, a notification is provided to check the safety.

“The area where artificial intelligence (AI) can have the greatest effect is education. We will build an AI education ecosystem to help companies grow top talent for the AI era.”

Kim Jae-won, CEO of ELRIS Group, made the remarks during a recent interview with Maeil Economy at its headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Founded in 2015, Ellis Group provides AI education platforms to various customers, including large companies, schools, and research institutes. The representative platform, “Elise LXP,” has increased by more than 1 million users from 1.72 million in July last year to 2.75 million in July this year. It is used by more than 9,500 companies and institutions, including Samsung, SK, LG, Seoul National University, and KAIST. Last year, it ranked 16th, the highest among Korean companies, on the “World’s Best Edutech Company” by Time magazine.

CEO Kim graduated from the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Waterloo in Canada and worked at AMD, Nvidia, and Telus. Since 2012, he has been doing a master’s degree in AI at KAIST and decided to start a business.

CEO Kim said, “We decided that it would be business-friendly if we started a business by combining AI and cloud with education,” adding, “We are implementing an educational virtualization practice environment with ‘ElisLXP’, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) developed with our own technology, and ‘Elis Cloud’, an AI cloud solution, and providing customized AI-specific solutions.”

ELRISLXP is an all-in-one education solution equipped with a learning management system for education and non-face-to-face classes and is equipped with various technologies for AI education. Ellis Cloud is equipped with technology that allows you to listen to lectures and practice at the same time in the cloud. For example, when studying, a practical environment is provided where you can watch videos and actually code.

Currently, Ellis Group is focusing on the mobile modular data center (PMDC) business. PMDC is a next-generation data center that can quickly install and operate servers, power, and cooling modules in container units. The construction period is about 3 months on average, which is significantly shorter than the existing method, and is optimized for the latest GPU server environment.

“The most important thing when practicing AI education is the GPU cloud environment, but the price is too high,” CEO Kim said. “We will supply cheap solutions that can be used for education through PMDC.”

However, Ellis Group does not have enough funds yet. CEO Kim said, “We received 1.5 billion won in investment through the parent fund and received help in a timely manner,” but added, “We have invested more than 100 billion won in the AI education cloud alone, but it is still difficult to raise capital.” He continued, “I hope the government will reach not only large companies but also venture companies as various government ministries are implementing AI transition policies.”

In response, Lee Chun-woo, a professor of business administration at University of Seoul, who is active as a “venture supporter” composed of experts to mark the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the Venture Business Association, strongly recommended the venture company confirmation system. Professor Lee said, “The venture company confirmation system is perfect for venture companies that are considering global expansion and funding expansion. If we actively utilize this system to develop AI technology, it will greatly help the government’s AI transition policy.”

The venture company confirmation system is a system that finds venture companies with technological innovation and growth potential and provides tax benefits such as corporate tax and income tax cuts, funding, manpower support, and overseas expansion support. Over the past 30 years, it has served as a cradle of innovation growth by producing leading companies including Naver, NCsoft, Krafton, and Nexon.

CEO Kim explained, “Ellis Group is also continuing education to strengthen AI capabilities promoted by the government and public institutions such as defense, health and medical care based on its venture confirmation history.”

CEO Kim emphasized, “AI transition is an area where large-scale capital is invested,” adding, “In addition to the drastic expansion of venture investment and improvement of the venture capital market constitution, policy funding and tax support through the venture company confirmation system must be smoothly provided to focus more resources on technology development.”
