AI expert joins UH to lead tech, innovation across campuses

With a career shaping artificial intelligence (AI) strategy for global corporations and major public university systems, Ina Wanca is set to guide the University of Hawaiʻi’s technological future. Effective August 25, 2025, Wanca will join UH as its new Chief Academic Technology Innovation Officer, a strategic role created to modernize infrastructure and coordinate technology innovation across the 10-campus system.
“Hawaiʻi’s 10 campuses are like islands in the ocean—very distinct and yet really connected. So what I’m looking to do is to ensure that the current flow of innovation between them is coordinated,” Wanca said. “Every student, every faculty member and every community should feel supported, because technology at the end of the day is the tool. Belonging is the goal.”
As a pivotal strategic executive within the UH President’s Office, Wanca is charged with developing a comprehensive AI and technology strategy to enhance instructional environments, research capabilities and administrative efficiency across the UH System. Her duties also include establishing robust governance frameworks for responsible technology adoption and forging partnerships with community and industry organizations to address workforce needs and create new student opportunities.
“The rise of artificial intelligence presents a pivotal opportunity,” said UH President Wendy Hensel. “Ina’s knowledge and experience in creating responsible, human-centered AI strategies will be an incredible asset for the UH System. I am confident she will assist us in building an infrastructure that enhances everything from student learning to faculty research, positioning UH as a leader in ethical innovation.”
A history of success
Wanca’s passion for education is deeply personal, stemming directly from the influence of her mother, a now retired teacher. Her commitment to learning was not merely an academic pursuit but began as a foundational principle instilled within the very walls of their home. Her mother built an environment where true learning is linked to cultivating curiosity and character.
“She taught me to dream boldly, stay grounded in integrity, and carry forward the responsibility work of mentorship,” said Wanca. “Those lessons became my compass.”
In her recent role as the Chief Academic AI Officer for the City University of New York (CUNY), Wanca built the first systemwide AI blueprint for 275,000 learners. Before CUNY, she was the head of the AI practice group at MasterCard, where she led a $1.5 billion portfolio that reshaped global trust frameworks. She has also served as a professor at New York University (NYU) and holds a master’s degree in global affairs and cybersecurity from NYU and a law degree from the University of Varna in Bulgaria.
As she begins her new role at UH, Wanca emphasizes a philosophy of stewardship, where technology is intentional, ethical and scalable. Her first step, she said, will be to listen.
“There are many voices, and I would like to sit with students, with faculty and staff to hear their hopes, their hurdles and their visions,” Wanca said. “I believe that the University of Hawaiʻi doesn’t need isolated projects. It needs a systemwide map…that’s how you build across the 10 campuses without losing the uniqueness of each.”
Modernization as a bridge
For Wanca, modernizing technology and expanding online learning is a matter of equity, global contribution and resilience.
“Access cannot depend on a zip code or bus or train schedules or any circumstances,” she said. “For many of our students–working parents, caregivers, adult learners spread across different islands–online education is not optional. It’s actually the bridge.”
She also sees it as an opportunity for sharing Hawaiʻi’s unique wisdom—from Indigenous knowledge and sustainability practices and more—with the world. This modernization, she believes, also guarantees educational continuity across the UH System.
“Innovation with intention is actually transformative,” she said. “What excites me the most is that we have a chance to leap ahead and to show how a public university rooted in principles like aloha can become a model for the world.”

xAI sues former engineer for allegedly stealing ChatGPT-beating technology

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI filed a federal lawsuit on August 28, 2025, against former engineer Xuechen Li, alleging theft of confidential information containing “cutting-edge AI technologies with features superior to those offered by ChatGPT.” The 29-page complaint filed in the Northern District of California seeks damages and emergency injunctive relief to prevent Li from working at OpenAI while the case proceeds through court.

Li sold approximately $7 million in company stock through two transactions facilitated by xAI itself – receiving $4.7 million on July 23 and $2.2 million on July 25, the same day he allegedly copied confidential files. He “deleted his browser history and system logs, renamed files, and compressed files prior to uploading them to his Personal System,” according to the complaint. Li also changed critical account passwords on August 11, 2025, after receiving xAI’s demand letter, then claimed he could not “remember” the new credentials during subsequent negotiations.
