Several killed in severe weather in Texas and New Jersey

Published

on

Several people have died and more are missing after severe weather hit parts of central Texas and New Jersey in the US.

Authorities in New Jersey say at least three people died in the state following heavy rain and thunderstorms on Thursday night.

On Friday morning, flash flooding in Texas prompted disaster declarations for the Hill Country and Concho Valley regions.

In Kerr County, the sheriff’s office has reported catastrophic flooding with several people missing and confirmed loss of life.

Exactly how many people have died or are missing in Texas has not yet been confirmed by authorities.

Rescues and evacuations have been underway since the early morning and there are warnings of more potential flash flooding to come in the state.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the state was providing “all necessary resources to Kerrville, Ingram, Hunt and the entire Texas Hill Country dealing with these devastating floods”.

The region is to the north-west of the city of San Antonio.

Pictures show the deep flood waters swamping bridges and fast moving water swirling down roads.

“Folks, please don’t take chances. Stay alert, follow local emergency warnings, and do not drive through flooded roads,” Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said.

The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office told residents near creeks, streams and the Guadalupe River to move to higher ground.

In New Jersey, authorities say among the three killed were two men, aged 79 and 25, who died after a tree fell onto their car in Plainfield during Thursday’s severe storm.

A 44-year-old woman was also killed when a tree fell on her vehicle in North Plainfield.

“Our hearts are heavy today,” said Mayor Adrian Mapp of Plainfield. “This tragedy is a sobering reminder of the power of nature and the fragility of life.”

The storms forced the New Jersey city to cancel its planned 4 July parade and fireworks show.

MacBooks, Windows 11 machines, Chromebooks and others

Published

on

So you need a new laptop — you’ve waited for the right time. Amazon Prime Day 2025, as has been in years past, offers a ton of laptop deals to consider. All kinds of devices are on sale this year, from refreshed MacBooks to high-end gaming machines to already affordable notebooks. But sussing out a good deal from a just-ok deal (or even worse, a bad deal all together), can be a challenge. Laptop prices on Amazon are all over the place even when it’s not Prime Day depending on the configuration of the notebook, the brand, the seller and a bunch of other factors.

This is where Engadget can help. We’ve poured over the Prime Day laptop deals available this year to pick out the best ones you can get across all kinds of computers. As always, if you’re super particular about the display panel you want in your next laptop, or you know you want to get as much RAM as possible, we recommend going straight to manufacturers to customize your next PC. But if you’re willing to work with premade models, Prime Day deals could help you save some cash on your next laptop.

Apple’s latest laptops are the MacBook Air M4 and the MacBook Pro M4, but the M3-powered machines are still available and great values when you can get them at steep discounts. But for the most future-proof options, we recommend going with the M4 MacBooks. Amazon actually has decent MacBook deals throughout the year, most of the time on the base configurations of any given model. In a welcomed update, Apple recently made all base models of the MacBook Air M4 have 16GB of RAM by default (which is the same as you’ll find on the base-level Pros).

You’ve got a lot of variety to choose from when it comes to Windows laptops, and that can be a blessing or a curse. We recommend looking for a laptop from a reputable brand (i.e. Microsoft, Dell, Acer, Lenovo and others like them), and one that can handle daily work or play pressures. That means at least 8GB of RAM and 245GB of SSD storage, plus the latest Intel or AMD CPUs. If you’re looking for a new gaming laptop, you’ll need a bit more power and a dedicated graphics card to boot. Now is a good time to consider upgrading as well since Windows 10 will be sunset in October this year and Microsoft has recommended users upgrade to newer Windows 11 laptops.

Most Chromebooks start off pretty affordable, so that just means you can get them for even less during an event like Prime Day. If you’re a Chrome OS lover, it’s also a decent time to check out sales on premium Chromebooks, which can usually cost $500 or more. In general, we recommend looking for at least 4 to 8GB of RAM and at least 128GB of SDD storage in a Chromebook that you plan on using as your daily driver.

Refresh

AirPods Pro 2 down to $159

Adding an extra pair of AirPods to your Apple ecosystem is probably one of the best things you can do when it comes to convenience. That way, you can leave one pair in the car or at the office so you’re never without a pair to throw on quickly.

Several different AirPod models are discounted for Prime Day, but the best of the best is the AirPods Pro 2 which is currently down to $159 at Amazon. These earbuds offer Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking for a more immersive audio experience. In our AirPods Pro 2 review, we said they take everything we loved about the original AirPods Pro to the next level.

Color me impressed

Prime Day is naturally one of the best times to pick up one of Amazon’s own devices at a friendlier price and nowhere is that more true than with a Kindle. Although there are several Kindle deals available right now, the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition is on sale for $179 — its lowest price to date.

The Colorsoft made its entrance last year as the first ever color Kindle (perfect for graphic novel fans) and we awarded it 4.5 stars in our review of the Kindle Colorsoft. If you’re looking for one of the best Kindles at a great price, this is it.

Grab some discounted PS5 games and accessories too

Although the PS5 Slim and the PS5 Pro aren’t on sale, you can still save quite a lot on some of the best PS5 games and accessories at Amazon right now.

From big blockbuster games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows to more storage like this 1TB SSD from WD-Black, Prime Day is the perfect time to give your console a major upgrade or pick up your next PS5 game.

Up your streaming game with this deal

A photo of the Amazon Fire TV Cube (2022) on a desk

While many of the best streaming devices plug right into the back of your TV, the Amazon Fire TV Cube doesn’t as it features a built-in Alexa-powered smart speaker. You also don’t need an adapter if you want to connect it to your router via an Ethernet cable for even lower latency but it also comes with Wi-Fi 6E for super fast downloads over Wi-Fi.

Right now, you can pick up a Fire TV Cube for just $89. This is $50 off and the lowest price we’ve seen yet for Amazon’s most advanced streaming device. Oh and did I mention you get an Alexa Voice Remote Enhanced in the box too.

An iPad you’ll actually use

An iPad mini on a desk with a Tom's Guide Price Drop deals badge

Have you ever bought a tablet thinking you’ll use it all the time for browsing the web, watching movies, taking notes and more only for it to end up gathering dust on your shelf? Well, I certainly have. That is until I went back to using smaller tablets like Apple’s iPad mini.

With a small tablet like the iPad mini 7, it’s easy to bring it with you anywhere you go. Right now, you can get an iPad mini for just $399 at Amazon, or $100 off its normal price.

If you want something bigger, don’t worry as most of the best iPads are also on sale too. However, if you want all the features you get with an iPad in a small, easy-to-carry form factor, the iPad mini might be the best one for you too.

Seeing is believing

The Viture Pro XR Glasses with their case on a table with a Tom's Guide Price Drop badge on top

You can’t always bring a TV with you but with a pair of the best smart glasses, you absolutely can. We’re probably going to see even more AR and XR glasses discounted as Prime Day continues but right now, you can pick up a pair of the Viture Pro XR glasses for over $100 off.

I’ve been testing these smart glasses out myself and they’ve made watching movies and playing games even better. For instance, I wore them on a 16 hour flight about a month ago and just last weekend, I played the Nintendo Switch 2 in AR using them. For that second one, you will need to pick up the Viture Pro Mobile Dock but good news, you can get the glasses and the dock in a bundle and Viture is even throwing in a free controller too.

If you want the big screen experience on the go or even in bed, a pair of smart glasses is the perfect Prime Day pickup.

Stay cool with a smart fan this summer

The best smart home devices range from simple smart lights to more complex ones like smart thermostats. However, even some of the simplest appliances are now available with a smart upgrade and many are already on sale for Prime Day.

Take this Govee smart fan for instance which is $54 off with a coupon right now and could dip even further as Prime Day continues. If you’re tired of getting up to adjust your fan or forgetting to turn it off, than a smart fan like this one could be the perfect upgrade to help you beat the heat this summer.

Take your video calls to the next level

An Obsbot Meet 2 4K webcam on top of a laptop with a Tom's Guide Lowest Price deals badge on top

Whether you’re working from home or just want to look your best for friends and family in video calls, then you definitely need a good webcam. While your laptop likely already has one built-in, it probably isn’t that good. Likewise, if you use a desktop and a monitor then you’ll definitely need to pick up one of the best webcams sooner or later.

Right now at Amazon, you can get the Obsbot Meet 2 for just $99. Not only is this its lowest price yet but you’re not limited to boring colors since this webcam comes in space grey, cloud white or aurora green like in the picture above. At just 1.78 x 1.4 x 0.87 inches, the Obsbot Meet 2 is an absolutely tiny webcam that you can bring with you anywhere. Plus, it has a USB-C port on the back instead of a hardwired connection, so you can use whatever cable you want.

Say goodbye to Wi-Fi dead zones for good

If you’re tired of having your devices disconnect from your home network as you move throughout the house, then picking up one of the best mesh Wi-Fi systems is the easiest way to fix your Wi-Fi woes for good.

Now with Prime Day too, there’s never been a better time to get a two-piece or even a three-piece mesh router set to fill your whole home with a strong wireless signal. In fact, you can get a Wi-Fi 7-powered mesh router in a two-pack for just $201 right now.

Leave that bulky charger at home

If you’re tired of carrying multiple chargers for all your various devices or maybe that bulky laptop one is taking up too much space in your bag, then Prime Day is the perfect time to pick up a GaN charger for cheap. The Ugreen Nexode 65W GaN charger is one of my favorites and you can grab one for yourself for just $24 right now.

I actually have two of these chargers at home and they’re great for on the go but they also help free up outlets at your desk. At just 2.59 inches long, 1.22 inches wide and 1.57 inches tall, you can easily slip this tiny charger into any bag or even your pocket.

On the front of the device, you get two USB-C ports and USB-A port so you can charge up to three devices simultaneously. However, to get the full 65W and fast charger your laptop or phone, you’re going to want to use the USB-C port at the top.

Forget shaving your legs for the beach with this home laser hair removal device

Braun IPL Silk Expert Pro 5 with killer deal badge

When it’s boiling outside, there’s nothing better than heading to the beach or a pool to cool off.

But you may have a little problem called leg hair. It’s so annoying to remember to shave. Fortunately, I found a solution to this predicament — and you can get it on sale now.

The Braun IPL Silk Expert Pro 5 is just $279 at Amazon in a fantastic Prime Day deal that takes 20% off.

Thanks to this little miracle, I almost never have to shave my legs anymore. If you’re also ready to say goodbye to the endless shaving struggle, this might be your new best friend.

I know that price is still an investment, but compared to the cost, time and efficacy of other hair removal options, it really pays off.

This Paramount Plus deal is almost too good to be true

Paramount Plus app on a phone next to popcorn

Finally, I can begin binge-watching “Couples Therapy”!

I’ve been waiting until Prime Day to see if Paramount Plus might be one of the Prime Day streaming deals on offer. And luck is on my side, because it is!

Paramount Plus Premium is just $0.99 via Prime Video Channels for two months. The regular monthly price is $12.99, so that is a massive savings!

The Essential plan is also the same price, but you should definitely get the Premium plan since it offers everything Essential does, plus: no ads (except on live TV), Showtime programs and a live feed of your local CBS station.

This Paramount Plus deal could not come at a better time. “Dexter: Resurrection” premieres Sunday, July 11, while “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” season 3 has set its phasers on July 17.

And of course, now I can binge all of “Couples Therapy” season 4.

Black Friday is hands-down the best time of the year to buy a new TV. It’s when you’ll see the lowest prices on practically every TV. But the truth is — TV deals can be found any day of the week and especially during major retail holidays.

With the uncertainty of tariffs, however, I would do my TV shopping now instead of later. Whether you’re in the market for an inexpensive 4K TV or want to upgrade to your first OLED TV, Amazon is offering discounts on all types of TVs. Tom’s Guide TV reviewer Ryan Epps has highlighted some of his top picks in our Prime Day TV deals hub. I’ve also hand-picked a few noteworthy deals below.

James Gunn Gets Raves as New DC Universe Begins

Published

on

The social media embargo for James Gunn‘s “Superman” has been lifted, bringing with it the first reactions from members of the film press. The Warner Bros. tentpole is the latest superhero movie from “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Suicide Squad” writer-director Gunn, who is now overseeing DC Studios with Peter Safran. “Superman” marks the launch of a rebooted DC Universe on the big screen. Film press are calling it a “thrilling start” to Gunn’s DC Studios.

Film critic Bryan Sudfield praised “Superman” as a “bold yet faithful” feature adaptation of the DC icon. He added that Gunn’s take felt unique while still staying true to the character’s roots.

“‘Superman’ soars with heart, humor, and style—a bold yet faithful take on the iconic hero,” he wrote on X. “James Gunn sets a fresh tone while honoring the character’s legacy, and David Corenswet shines with sincerity and strength. A promising, thrilling start to DC’s new era.”

Entertainment journalist Brandon Davis took to X to praise David Corenswet’s performance as the titular Man of Steel, adding that his chemistry with Rachel Brosnahan was “an excellent driver” of the story.

“David Corenswet portrays an exceptional iteration of [Superman] with sincerity, heroism, purity, and inspirational traits,” he wrote. “Corenswet & Rachel Brosnahan’s chemistry for Clark and Lois is off the charts.”

However, not everyone was a fan of the DC Studio debut. Movie critic Peter Howell said “Superman” was “not the super start to the DC Universe everybody had been hoping for,” and that it prioritized style over substance.

“James Gunn is brilliant at conjuring spectacle and creating alien realms, not so great at storytelling,” he wrote on X. “David Corenswet plays a boyishly sweet Superman, constantly getting his ass kicked; he’d be better as the lead in a Dudley Do-Right movie. Rachel Brosnahan makes a spiky Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is more obnoxious than villainous. The real star of the show is superdog Krypto, who steals every scene he’s in — I’d rather see a movie about him.”

“Superman” stars Corenswet in the title role, plus Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The supporting cast includes Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillon (Guy Gardner), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl) and more. While plot specifics for the movie have remained under wraps, Gunn has said his superhero epic encompasses “the story of America.”

“I mean, ‘Superman’ is the story of America,” Gunn explained to The Sunday Times. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost… Yes, it’s about politics. But on another level it’s about morality. Do you never kill no matter what — which is what Superman believes — or do you have some balance, as Lois believes? It’s really about their relationship and the way different opinions on basic moral beliefs can tear two people apart.”

Check out more “Superman” first reactions below. The film opens in theaters July 11 from Warner Bros. and DC Studios.

“SUPERMAN reminds us that Clark Kent has always been a beacon of hope and the goodness that can exist in this world. James Gunn’s vision is a comic book brought to life and it bought a lightness and a happiness to one of the most beloved heroes around.” – Rachel Leishman (@RachelLeishman)

“This is the BEST #Superman movie to date. When James Gunn gets out of the way & lets his work speak for itself, it’s incredible. 💙💛❤️ It’s not perfect, but darn close & made me a believer in Gunn’s #DC.” – Grace Randolph (@GraceRandolph)

“There’s glimmers of a heartfelt, hopeful & optimistic #Superman akin to classic Action Comics, but the film sadly buckles under a convoluted & often silly plot. However, there are terrific performances from Corenswet, Brosnahan, Hoult & Gathegi – plus Krypto really is the best!” – Nicola Austin @nicola_aus

“James Gunn’s #Superman is the hero’s most vibrant, optimistic, and character-driven big screen outing since Richard Donner was as running the show. It lays a solid groundwork for a larger universe, but this is Superman’s story and a damn good one. Marvel let a big fish get away.” – Nick Spake (@NSpake)

“James Gunn absolutely nailed it with #Superman. From the music and VFX to the camerawork and humor, he crafted the ideal light-hearted, kid-friendly family film for the summer. Every character had standout moments—especially Krypto.” – Jeremy Kazieva (@jeremy_kazieva)

“Superman is filled with hope, love, and deeply powerful themes of what it means to be human. Corenswet completely embodies the strength and honor of the character, and his chemistry with Brosnahan is electric. Loved the action, and ambitious story. Gunn pulled it off!” – Ben Meter (@metersreviews)
