The “2025 World AI Competition (WAIC)” was held in Shanghai, China, where 800 companies from around the world gathered to showcase cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology. China, which is competing in technology with the United States, plans to introduce its AI technology to the world and take the lead in global AI with this WAIC. According to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 27th, WAIC opened at the Shanghai Expo Center the day before. Under the theme of “Global Solidarity in the Age of AI,” more than 800 global companies such as Google, Amazon, and Tesla, as well as Huawei and Baidu, which represent China’s big tech, participated in the event until the 28th.
Organizers introduced that more than 40 types of large language models (LLM), 50 AI terminal products, and 60 types of humanoid robots were displayed. It also said that there will be more than 100 types of technologies and products that will be unveiled for the first time in the world or for the first time in China.
It is Chinese companies that gained great attention at this event. Huawei unveiled its next-generation AI system ‘Cloud Matrix 384’ at WAIC.
Alibaba also displayed its first AI glasses product, ‘Quark’. The two lenses are equipped with navigation and AI camera functions. In particular, Alibaba’s payment system “Zpubao (Alipay)” is linked, allowing payment by wearing glasses and viewing QR codes. Alibaba plans to officially launch Quark by the end of this year. At the same time, emerging Chinese AI companies, also known as “AI Little 六,” such as ZpuAI, Minimax, Bai Chuan AI, 01.AI, Stepfun, and Moonshot AI, also held exhibition booths to promote their products. In addition, Chinese robot companies such as Unity and Agibot displayed four-legged walking robots, and overseas big tech companies such as Google, Amazon Web Service (AWS), and Cisco also participated.

At the opening ceremony held the day before, Chinese State Council Prime Minister Li Chang emphasized that China will take a leading position in the field of global AI governance.
In particular, he emphasized that AI technology should not be exclusive to a small number of countries or companies. Prime Minister Li said, “AI’s core resources and capabilities are concentrated in minority countries and minority companies. Each country, company, and group should have the right to develop and use AI equally.” China is making progress by promoting the ‘AI Plus (+) strategy,’ he said. “We will use these development experiences and technologies to help countries around the world and the Global South (mostly developing countries located in the southern hemisphere).”
This is interpreted as a statement aimed at the United States, which is imposing high-tech sanctions against China, and to emphasize China’s engagement policy that is different from that of the United States. Prime Minister Li also explained that China has announced a “Global AI Governance Initiative” in 2023 and a “Plan to Supply AI Capacity Construction” in 2024, and declared that the Chinese government is proposing the establishment of a “World AI Cooperation Organization” in time for this year’s competition.
