New Alert: M62 Traffic Disruptions Due Three Separate Crashes Near Manchester: All the New Updates You Need to Know

The M62 motorway, which is amongst Britain’s busiest and most significant transport routes, was severely affected this morning, as several incidents produced huge traffic jams for commuters and travelers. Extending across the Pennines, the M62 passes between major metropolitan centers like Manchester, Leeds, and Liverpool and is a very significant artery of local and inter-city traffic. A key route for good transport between North and South England, the motorway is an important link, and any congestion on this busy route inevitably produces spillover effects on networks within its periphery.
The morning’s traffic congestion hit thousands of drivers as separate multiple crashes resulted in varying degrees of congestion on both east and west carriageways. Commuter traffic, freight, and travelers on their way to various destinations resulted in congestion, causing widespread inconvenience, particularly during rush hours. Commuters were cautioned to bear with patience as emergency units and traffic control worked hard to clear affected areas and regain a state of normality.
Incident 1: Rochdale (Junction 20) – Westbound
At approximately 6:38 AM, a two-vehicle and a van accident was seen on the M62 westbound near Junction 20 at Rochdale. The accident made a section of the road impassable, so queues built around the scene.
Incident 2: Saddleworth to Huddersfield (Junctions 22–23) – Lane Closure
Further east, a second accident on the M62 westbound between Junctions 22 at Saddleworth and Junction 23 at Huddersfield forced a single lane to be closed. This accident produced more congestion as traffic was restricted to three lanes.
Incident 3: Warrington (Eastbound) – Over
On the opposite side of the M62, a van had overturned on the eastbound carriageway at Warrington, causing immense disruption.
The three accidents have been cleared and traffic is moving as usual. Drivers are advised to drive carefully and check if there’s any other news before embarking on a journey.
Emergency Response and Clearance Work on Incident Sites
Following the collisions early in the morning, emergency services, including Greater Manchester Police, fire services, and ambulances, quickly arrived on the scene of both collisions.
The initial accident near Junction 20 at Rochdale, involving a van and two cars, momentarily halted part of the M62 traveling in a westerly direction. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers quickly arrived on site to ensure the scene was secure and to aid in traffic control. Inrix, a traffic tracking system, showed that queues were building around the scene due to the blockade, and drivers were asked to use alternative roads to avoid further delay.
The second accident, between Junction 22 at Saddleworth and Junction 23 at Huddersfield, was another on the westbound carriageway. There was a lane closure after the accident, with additional delays on top of the ones caused by the previous accident at Rochdale. Officers got one of the lanes reopened by mid-morning, but traffic was slow-moving all day until recovery of the road was finished.
One of the most disruptive incidents was on the eastbound M62 at Warrington, when a van had overturned on the carriageway. Traffic was halted temporarily between Junctions 10 and 11, and this created significant delays among traffic moving eastbound. It was stated by traffic updates that emergency services worked throughout the early morning hours to recover the overturned vehicle. It was finally resolved by around 6:30 AM, and all of these lanes reopened for traffic to move freely once again.
Drivers’ Advice and Travel Tips
The incidents were cleared during the course of the morning, and traffic was flowing freely once again. Drivers were, however, advised to remain vigilant as secondary congestion and slow-moving traffic remained on affected roads. Commuters traveling on the M62 or other nearby roads were advised to seek out real-time traffic information to ensure the quickest and safest trip.
For travelers moving from Manchester or eastwards to West Yorkshire, authorities warned that these kinds of jams have a way of creating erratic developments in congestion. Drivers should use detours, particularly during rush hours when traffic flow is at its highest. Also, drivers should carry extra fuel, food, and water because sometimes jams last longer than expected.

TSA tosses shoe removal policy effective immediately
Homeland Security Sec. Kristi Noem announced TSA will no longer require passengers to remove shoes at checkpoints.
More than 11,000,000 travelers passed through Southwest Florida International Airport in 2024, a new record for that statistic.
According to TSA security measures, all of them were required a checkpoints.
Not anymore. Shoes off has gone to shoes on.
As of July 8 you will no longer have to take your shoes off at RSW or any U.S. airport security checkpoints.
“TSA will no longer require travelers to remove their shoes when they go through our security checkpoint,” said Kristi Noem, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

TSA ends shoes-off policy at RSW checkpoints
Noem announced July 8 that a new policy which will allow passengers traveling through domestic airports to keep their shoes on while passing through security screening at TSA checkpoints.
When will new TSA shoe policy start at RSW?
The new policy allowing travelers to keep their shoes on is effective immediately, the TSA said.
Why did TSA end the shoes-off policy at RSW, other airports?
“The new policy will increase hospitality for travelers and streamline the TSA security checkpoint process, leading to lower wait times,” the TSA announced on its website.
“Ending the ‘Shoes-Off’ policy is the latest effort DHS is implementing to modernize and enhance traveler experience across our nation’s airports,” Noem said.
“We expect this change will drastically decrease passenger wait times at our TSA checkpoints, leading to a more pleasant and efficient passenger experience.”
Will passengers remain safe at RSW if everyone can keep their shoes on through screening?
“As always, security remains our top priority,” Noem said.
“Thanks to our cutting-edge technological advancements and multi-layered security approach, we are confident we can implement this change while maintaining the highest security standards.”
Some things haven’t changed at RSW’s TSA checkpoints
“Other aspects of TSA’s layered security approach will still apply during the TSA checkpoint process,” the TSA said.
“Passengers must still clear identity verification, Secure Flight vetting, and other processes.”
When did the TSA shoes-off policy start and why?
The shoe removal policy was put into place in 2006 in response to a December 2001 attempt by an airline passenger to conceal a bomb in his shoe.
Since then most passengers had to remove their shoes as part of the standard security screening. There were a few exceptions:
However, if the alarm goes off during the security screening, “you may be required to remove your shoes for further screening or undergo a pat-down,” the TSA said.
Other recent changes implemented by TSA at RSW
On July 2, the TSA announced a program called “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease,” which provides special benefits to uniformed service members and their families, including a TSA PreCheck enrollment discount and expedited access lanes at select airports.
The program is free for Gold Star families and a $25 discount for military spouses with expedited travel lanes for service members.
REAL ID implemented in May with high compliance rate
REAL ID went into effect May 7. The TSA said there’s been a 94 percent compliance rate, “which has led to a more efficient security process.”
A REAL ID is a federally approved, state-issued driver’s license or ID that meets security standards enacted by Congress after 9/11.
